The ouroboros is often interpreted as a symbol for eternal cyclic renewal or a cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
When not wrapped around something, It consumes itself into itself, until the mouth and the remainder of the body are so close that it can't be pulled through any more. It can't stretch and the mouth can eat no more, just a curled nub is left. In other words, it's run it's entire course and rendered itself useless.
