All bodies... bacteria... bugs.. mammals .. fish... return to the earth for all bodies are built from the earth... LIFE is in the spirit.. when spirit is gone... its just the elements of earth left.

this is funny but i too have thought about these things, especially the part about digging someone up and displaying them years later.. i would not like that if it were me.

When western civilizations "discovered" Egypt in the 1800's, the first thing they did was to start digging up Mummies by the thousands, but that practice had already been well-established by locals for several thousands of years... and it all happened for two very different reasons!

They were so plentiful, nomads of the region would use those dried, papery bodies for FUEL to stoke the fires that kept them warm during the cold desert nights, murmuring a few prayers as they stoked those flames. But the wealthy Victorian British would ship them home as curiosity pieces to proudly display in their homes... even holding mummy unwrapping parties in greater displays of disrespect. Overall, I'd say the nomads had the right idea because at least those mummies helped to sustain life instead of just satisfying social vanities.

While most people think Egyptian mummification was the epitome of religious ritual [and in many ways it was], they also played fast and loose with those beliefs as funerals themselves became a huge commercial industry. And in the valley of the Kings, an entire town did nothing but dig graves and build monuments for centuries. [BTW: for a modern version of this, look up the little town of COLMA, CA which does the same thing today! I went there to visit Wyatt Earp's grave and the entire town's an interesting, if slightly morbid place to experience]

It became a symbol of social status to have elaborate funerals with hired mourners chanting sacred prayers from the Book of the Dead, followed by feasts where sometimes the entire village would attend, depending upon the wealth of the deceased. The more money, the more mourners, the flashier the casket and bigger the tomb. Again, just like today where it still happens in most cultures!

The Book of the Dead itself was a collection of funerary prayers dating back millennia that were supposed to aid the soul in the afterlife. But that book wasn't all that special, either! Whereas the wealthy would hire a scribe to hand write a papyrus detailing personal accomplishments designed to impress Anubus [the God of the dead and afterlife], the poorer classes could simply buy generic, ready-made scrolls where the name of the dead relative would just be inked into blank spaces in the text!

You're absolutely CORRECT! In many cases, the lower Egyptian classes did save their entire lifetimes for their eventual exit. And the Pharaohs themselves spent much of their reigns building the tombs they too would someday occupy... in many cases those underground labyrinths weren't completed until long after the ruler had died.

Even so, emptying graves is certainly not uncommon. I mentioned the town of Colma, CA earlier; hundreds of those graves came from San Francisco [where there are no active, public cemeteries] when a massive graveyard was excavated to build civic center plaza - where the City Hall now stands. Where elaborate head stones once dotted the field, today those graves are filled by cars in an underground parking garage!

And in New Orleans [where high water levels require above-ground entombment] cemetery space is at such a premium that for over 100 years those tombs were only rented, and if the heirs missed a payment, those bodies were pulled out to find new housing!

Dead bodies don’t care about anything. The Spirits that inhabited those bodies have long since moved on. You aren’t bound to your decaying body forever lol. Their beliefs were demonic and wrong.
