Might as well be a tropical depression with the damage it did. Whoever said 6 inch surge wasn’t lying Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76515319 The statement from the NHC was that the storm surge is unsurvivable. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78689367 They forecasted a stretch of the Louisiana coast to get a 10-20 foot storm surge. They have to do it over an area knowing that from point to point some would get more storm surge than other points. Cameron reported a 10 foot surge, but east of that, where the storm was stronger, know one knows and no one will know because there are no structures 20 feet off the ground for which to gauge with. This general area is a large wildlife refuge and swamp. With a slight wobble there very well could have been a 15, 18, or 20 foot surge in Cameron. Or a larger shift could have brought a 10-20 foot surge to Galveston under a different cone. |

This after and before picture clearly illustrates how strong and devastating Hurricane Laura was that made landfall overnight on the coast of #Louisiana and #Texas, USA. Next hurricane could pop up in the Caribbean during the first week of September, according to this model. Could make its way to the US, but that's a long way off at this point to have any confidence. Per NHC estimates, no it didn't, but very close. It could be revised up to a Cat 5 after all the damage reports have come in. That's what happened with Hurricane Michael (2018) - it was given high end Cat 4 status at first but later revised up to a Cat 5 after they saw the evidence of damage that were consistent with that of a Cat 5. NHC Update for Carolinas through Middle Atlantic region.. Remnants of Laura are forecast to accelerate through the southern Appalachians and Carolinas to southern Middle Atlantic regions on Saturday as the system becomes absorbed within belt of westerlies. Laura may become loosely phased with a progressive northern-stream trough that will move through the Great Lakes and Northeast States. The accompanying cold front should extend from a surface low over the lower Great Lakes southwestward into the Ohio Valley early in the day. The front will continue into the Northeast States and Middle Atlantic during the mid to late afternoon. Rich tropical moisture will reside in pre-frontal warm sector, but weak lapse rates and potential for widespread clouds will likely result in marginal instability. The stronger low-level wind fields and largest hodographs accompanying Laura should spread through NC and possibly over southern VA based on latest guidance. The tornado threat should be greatest in these areas, conditional upon sufficient destabilization of the boundary layer. Farther north into the Mid Atlantic, low-level hodographs will be smaller, but the kinematic nvironment might be sufficient for a threat of locally strong wind gusts, especially if pockets of heating can occur in pre-frontal warm sector.
