Theft of The Nation - Donald R. Cressey - Have you ever heard of this book?
I stopped by a thrift store today. After 30 minutes I found a hardbound book titled "Theft of the Nation"

From what I understand so far, this book is about the mafia.

The chapters are:
1 Trouble
2 From Mafia to Cosa Nostra
3 War, Peace, and peaceful coexistence
4 Educating the Public
5 Demand, Supply, and Profit
6 The Structural Skeleton
7 Origin of the Authority Structure
8 The Code
9 Some Functions of the Code
10 Shifting Patterns of Authority and Recruitment
11 Corrution of the Law-enforcement and Political Systems
12 Search, Destroy, and Appease

Sounds like a link from the past to the present.

He served as a consultant on organized crime for the President's Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice in 1966 and 1967.

Started reading again.

Quoting chapter 1; trouble,

"If syndicate rulers are permitted to achieve a monopoly on the democratic processes in the United states, we surely will regard as inevitable or even as "democratic" a world of ghettos, inequality, and discriminatory practices."

"In many ways organized crime is the most sinister kind of crime in America. The men who control it have become rich and powerful by encouraging the needy to gamble, by luring the troubled to destroy themselves with drugs, by extorting the profits of honest and hardworking businessmen, by collecting usury from those in financial plight, by maiming or murdering those who oppose them, by bribing those sworn to destroy them."
