What these 'forward thinkers' appear to forget is that, in a global society, we are not solitary islands.

Change your language if you want, but what about when it comes to interact with others?

While American kids are dumbed down, the rest of the world will continue to speak proper English, and conduct business using this proper English. Americans will grow up to be sidelined by the rest of the world who abide only by Cambridge and Oxford English standards. They set the exams, they will be the benchmark for entry into the upper echelons of corporate affairs.

And novels will only continue to sell if they use proper English.. This is why James Joyce's Ulysses has aged far better and sells more than Finnegan's Wake.

Bookworms like myself will not read gender neutral novels or books which veer from 99% of what we usually read. These best sellers are best sellers for a reason...they use standardised English that the majority of people can easily read.

Perhaps these English professors need to live in the real world sometime.
