Routine wisdom teeth removal is a Public Health Hazard - NIH document says it!!!

read it - do you have yours still in?

IN THE UNITED STATES, prophylactic removal of third molars (wisdom teeth) is advocated by almost all oral and maxillofacial surgeons and many general dentists. According to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, “if there is insufficient anatomical space to accommodate normal eruption. . . removal of such teeth at an early age is a valid and scientifically sound treatment rationale based on medical necessity.”1 As a result, 10 million teeth classified as impactions (teeth that fail to erupt into normal position but remain fully or partially embedded and covered by jawbone or gum tissue) are removed every year from mostly healthy young people.2

There is no evidence of widespread third-molar infection and pathology or of medical necessity to justify so much surgery. In fact, 50% of upper third molars classified as impactions are normally developing teeth, most of which will erupt with minimal discomfort if not extracted prematurely. Only 12% of truly impacted teeth are associated with pathological conditions such as cysts and damage to adjacent teeth.3,4 Most discomfort of erupting wisdom teeth is equivalent to teething and disappears on full eruption. Most infection of the gum tissue around the erupting or partially erupted teeth can be prevented by good oral hygiene, including toothbrushing. Infection occurs in fewer than 10% of third molars, most of which can be cured with antibiotics, oral rinsing, or removal of excess tissue (the hyperculum) around the tooth, without requiring removal of the tooth itself.5 Most of the pain and illness attributed to third molars is caused by the surgery, not the teeth.

Third-molar surgery is a multibillion-dollar industry that generates significant income for the dental profession, particularly oral and maxillofacial surgeons. It is driven by misinformation and myths that have been exposed before but that continue to be promulgated by the profession

I still have every single tooth God game me. Have not seen a dentist in 23yrs. Funny in that my last post on another thread was how 23 is my lucky number. Very strange.

My wisdom teeth began coming in back in HS, and they are only 90% in at 41yrs. From 16-30yrs they would hurt for a few days 3-4x a year, then the pain would go away. In my 40's they still sometimes hurt a bit for a day or two about 1-2x a year. Growing pains at 41yrs. My feet recently grew a half size too, and I have not gained a single pound.

I have all of mine and yes my dentist was also surprised

Never had any issues with them being left in

I would say unless they get decayed and need to come out or cause headaches leave them alone

Still have all of mine. Dentist told me, a while back that they would eventually become an issue and they wanted to extract them. But I just ignored them and everything is still fine.

same here, for decades.

I got one removed for dental work to be done - it was wimpy, and might have fallen out eventually, but had caused ZERO problems.

Most dentists are thieves. I had my teeth capped for cosmetic reasons when I was 20. I've spent over $100k on dental work since then to keep my own teeth and avoid dentures. A full upper arch of implants and bridges cost me just under 70,000 and we're waiting to do the lowers next yes when my insurance resets.

My upper wisdom teeth came in rotted. I had no choice but to pay $300 per tooth to have them removed. My lowers are still in my jaw and will stay there.

Those who pay tens of thousands avoiding dentures are silly. My teeth were never good. Born with the bacteria that causes both tooth decay and hardened arteries. My teeth have been a source of extreme pain my entire life. I'm glad they're gone and I have dentures. I can eat without pain for the first time in my life. Sure it takes 2 or 3 months to get used to them and it hurts getting used to them. I won't lie and say it's easy, but it's definitely worth it.

Yeah they don’t cause any problems until they get infected , and being impacted , pushing into other teeth can cause an immense amount of pain that makes you wish you didnt wait for pain to happen in the first place

Two of my wisdom teeth had broken through and messing up my cheek somehow. As tiny as they were my check on the inside was all white and soar.

Since they were there I had them take the other 2, didn't want to go through it again.

I used to see my dentist more than I see my mom. It's a scam. They will always find something wrong, usually requiring a root canal to fix it. And all the xrays.. for what?

dentist are scam artist.

that being said, wisdom teeth killed people in the old days.its what starts the downward spiral of massive teeth destruction by unalignment.

the best thing a person can do is use that health insurance from your job and get them pulled.its called surgery if you get them pulled before they break through the skin and its cost is cheap if you have health insurance.
yes its paid for by health insurance not dental insurance.

USarmy yanked all 4 of mine, a shot of novacane and two one day and two a week later.
No insurance fraud, just pain.

The dentist grabbed my chin with his hand and tucked the back of my head into his chest like a football.
Grabbed a tooth with "pizza pan" holder pliers and pulled, ripped and rotated those suckers. I can still them being ripped from my jaw 40 years ago.
About a minute for each tooth.
I had tears coming from my eyes.

I would not have gone through that if it wasn't necessary.
The army would not have done it if it wasn't necessary.

No insurance just pain.
