They did a nice job on that recreation of WWII gun camera footage.

20 years ago there was Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator. It wasn't as detailed as today's games but was great fun. There were 3 WWII pilots that played multiplayer with us younger guys. Two were fighter pilots and one guy flew the Hump into China. I wonder if they are still with us as they were in their 70's back then.

This simulator when played on a High end Virtual Reality headset is the most fun you can have with your pants on.

Look again at the above vid, at around 1.02 he’s throwing rounds at an aircraft IN A HANGER.

As for left and right, the rudder gives you huge movement in both directions when strafing.

I went to the movie theater when the film Red Tails came out. I was expecting it to be excellent, because George Lucus was the director. Damn...I was disappointed! It really looked very CGI. I'm adding a clip of one of the better combat scenes. This is the best clip I could find on Youtube, that's why the link is written in Japanese. Don't worry, the scene is in English.


And recently the movie Midway came out. I decided to skip this one until it came out on DVD. The previews looked so CGI. The original (1970s) version was great, as it used all authentic combat footage for the battle scenes. I'm linking a clip of both.

The movie Pearl Harbor which came out just before September 11th, 2001 (surprise, surprise, surprise) just after a government think tank said, "What we need to implement our plans is nothing less than a new Pearl Harbor.) Wow!

Anyways, back to the point of this thread.

This movie was largely disliked because it turned out that half the movie was a boring love story. Although I must say, the actresses were quite beautiful. So, this movie is basically hated by most war film afficianadoes. That's understandable, but also a damn shame because the battle scenes are excellent. The problem is, the film editors ruined the great combat by cutting it up with stupid shit, and interrupting the flow of the battle.

A few years ago, I decided to make my own edit, and I simply spliced together only the combat and cutting out all the shit. Then, you can see a GREAT combat film. Unfortunately, I cannot show you my edit; but I found a good one, similar to mine on Youtube.

This film shows how well CGI can be done when used correctly. A good mixture of real aircraft, sets, actors, real explosions, and CGI mixed in. And they used expensive, quality CGI. Not some cheap, video game like, cartoon quality, shit. So, this proves it can be done well. It just requires a Producer, Director, and Editor who know how to put it all together to make it work.

I think the film was trying to appeal to too many different people. The love story was to attract women, who typically do not like war movies. But that turns off the men who are the primary audience. Let's just say, they fucked up a potentially great war movie. Possibly one of the best ever.
