Why are there familiar themes like the light at the end of the tunnel? Poltergheists/spirits/specters in homes where a family member died? Why does hollywood constantly try to apply a vaneer or sheen to things previously regarded as horror?

To me the only things really "left" in horror are the mental whores. And if/when hollywood finally goes down that path (MoonKnight comics, Joker backstories, etc.) We will have a lot of loose looney people doing batshit crazy stuff.
