Trump defends claim coronavirus will disappear, citing 'herd mentality'

President Trump defended his assertion that the novel coronavirus would “disappear” with or without a vaccine on Tuesday, saying the United States would develop what he called “herd mentality.”

“With time it goes away,” Trump said during an ABC News town hall in Pennsylvania when pressed by host George Stephanopoulos on his public comments about the virus. “You'll develop, you'll develop herd — like a herd mentality. It's going to be, it’s going to be herd-developed, and that's going to happen. That will all happen. But with a vaccine, I think it will go away very quickly.”

Trump appeared to mistake “herd mentality” for “herd immunity,” which occurs when enough individuals develop immunity to prevent the spread of a disease.

So when do Republicans declare Trump unfit because he said "herd mentality" instead of herd immunity? Or because he talked about COVID with a woman tonight who said her mother died of cancer? That's how it works, right? Because that's what they've said about Joe Biden over far less.

A woman who immigrated from the Dominican Republican and lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and has not voted before as she just became a citizen, shared with Trump that her mother had died from breast cancer last month but had a dream to become a citizen and vote.

"I'm here because of her," the woman said through tears.

She went on to ask Trump what's he going to improve about the country's path to citizenship.

"We are doing something with immigration that I think is going to be very strong, because we want people to come in to our country, people like you. And like your mother. And that just shows how vicious the COVID is, especially when you have another problem you have a heart problem or another type of a problem. And it's a it's a very sad story," Trump said, not appearing to understand her mother had not died from the coronavirus but from cancer.

"I mean as far as your situation with your mother that is just devastating because I can imagine how you feel and sounds like a great woman and I'll tell you she, she -- and I can, I'm pretty good with people -- she gave us a great daughter, a great child," he said, continuing to talk about coronavirus therapeutics and vaccines. He never mentioned cancer.
