Bassett wanted to keep expenses down and play in the summer, when the NFL wasn't playing. Trump wanted to fill the league with stars and play in the fall to take on the NFL. John Bassett contracted a brain tumor and died in year two of the USFL. Unopposed, Trump went ahead with his plan and the league went bankrupt.
