Coin and copper shortage you say, China’s Copper Appetite Unsated With Imports Near Record
The global economic slump won’t be as sharp as previously feared this year, though the recovery is losing pace and will need support from governments and central banks for some time yet, according to the OECD.

The world economy will shrink 4.5% this year, less than the 6% forecast in June, the Paris-based institution said on Wednesday, upgrading its outlook in response to rebounds in activity since lockdowns ended. There were big revisions for the U.S. and the euro area, as well as China, which is now forecast to grow modestly, the only Group of 20 country with such a prospect.

The better view reflects the strong economic pickup in recent months and the vast injection of public resources. The U.S. unemployment rate fell more than forecast in August, while China this week reported positive retail and industrial production data.

While that initially strong pickup means the 2020 number looks a little less grim, the pace of the recovery is now fading, and output in many countries will still be below its pre-crisis level at the end of 2021. There’s also a risk of long-lasting damage to economies, as well as bankruptcies and job losses.

Amid such dangers, the OECD said governments and central banks will need to continue to provide support into 2021, after huge efforts this year that have bloated balance sheets and stretched fiscal budgets.

“The problem is that this V-shaped recovery is not going to happen,” OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria said on Bloomberg Television. “What we are saying is number one, don’t take away the support, don’t take away the relief, too fast.”

Copper price near 2-year high after Chinese imports rocket

Copper futures prices remained within shouting distance of the $3 a pound level on Tuesday on the back of a surge in Chinese imports of the metal and worries about supply from South America.

Copper for delivery in September trading in New York changed hands for $2.9460 a pound ($6,495 a tonne) in early afternoon trade, easing back from yesterday’s close at a two year high.

In March, the bellwether metal briefly traded below $2.00, levels last seen during the global financial crisis of 2008-2009, but has now recovered by nearly 50%.

Customs data released overnight showed China’s unwrought copper imports (anodes and cathodes) in June rose a stunning 50% from the previous month to 656,483 tonnes – a full 15% above the previous monthly record.

June cargoes were double that of the same month last year as the infrastructure and manufacturing sectors in China, responsible for more than half the world’s copper consumption, rapidly recover following the covid-19 slump.

A sign of what lies ahead. "Shortages" for Americans under bogus cover stories like covid while actual production is sent to China. Materials, food, meat, oil, etc. We'll be eating laboratory grown "plant" burgers while beef is sent to feed China. So much winning I can't stand it!

Pre-1982 pennies are worth more than 1 cent each in copper value currently. After 1982 pennies are mainly zinc with 2.5% copper. In WW 2 they removed copper from the pennies altogether and went to steel pennies. They needed the copper for war materials and copper-clad bullets.

All through 2016, every store was open. No coin shortages anywhere.

All through 2017, every store was open and the economy was picking up. No coin shortages anywhere.

All through 2018, every store was open. Economy getting even better, all the stores staying busy. No coin shortages anywhere.

All through 2019, every store was open. Economy booming. Everyone's buying what they want. No coin shortages anywhere.

Then in 2020 the government shut down most businesses and put millions out of work. Few places to spend even if you had the money, commerce shifted hard to online. In the middle of all this, we are supposed to believe that suddenly there's not enough coins to go around anywhere.

Anyone not seeing through this may as well be sleepwalking through this life.
