Re: IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PREPPER and PEOPLE WHO STOCKPILE COMMERCIAL FOODS FROM COMPANIES
With all due respect, some of you folks are excellent at doing your own thing. I can appreciate that. But this is not a thread about how to do things. That is not what this thread is about. Please do not derail it and go off topic.

Right now this subject is very important to me. I spent a lot of time counseling people on dehydrated foods, and assuring them that they were getting a quality product. When I check out my own stash I see that I have less than quality foods in my own stash so what does that mean for all of the customers that I have sold food to over the years and that is continually being sold now? What's going to happen to the family out in Utah or Alabama, or Virginia or Louisianan who spent literally thousands on their food supply when they go to open their foods – and see that half of it is crap?

I am looking for feedback on customers who have bought COMMERCIAL FOODS. I'm talking about the big companies where they dehydrate and package the foods. You all know what I'm talking about. The foods that were promoted by the big companies that advertised on Glenn Beck, and 1 million other places. I'm talking about THOSE companies and the quality of the foods now. I want to know how many people ended up with crap food after they were promised it would last.
 Quoting: MeowMix

Where ddid you have them stored?

They need to be in climate controlled storage or they won't last nearly as long.
 Quoting: ^TrInItY^

The three month supply I had stored under my bed on a carpeted floor inside the original containers it was shipped in. They are airtight and water proof. The temperature in my home is a constant 72°.

Other foods had been stored in internal closets within my home in various places. Dry and dark. No garages, no sheds, no basements. It's the coolest temperature I could possibly store it out without moving it to a refrigerated facility.
 Quoting: MeowMix

I think that's too warm. Store in a cool dry place as all the packets say. You're probably right that some foods went bad because they were sub par but cool/cold storage is what will keep most things fresh/edible. Closer to 50 degrees Fahrenheit is good. Colder the better. You'll probably have to build a cool room somewhere to avoid this.

were they #10 cans or mylar bags?

just wondering

Mylar.

Canned stuff stays good. The Mylar bags stuff can get nasty. Even in 72 degree temps.

I have Mountain House mylar packed meals that I have every once in while that were purchased in early 2008 with 2014 "best by" dates. Still as good as the day they were purchased. Only buy quality if you expect it to last.

Mtn HOuse beef stew is yummy as is the chicken stew. I stay away from most of the pasta, rice, and soup based meals although i do have have chili mac meals but usually i will eat those ones well before the exp. .

Beans and rice never go bad. Orchards never go bad. Fish ponds never go bad. Wild game never goes bad. Perennial beds never go bad. Canned meat lasts for decades. Seeds last for decades if stored properly. Do it right.
 Quoting: Icey

Try to cook and eat old beans. They will not get soft even after soaking and cooking for days.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67789290

^This^ I tried one day to cook up a pot of pinto beans that were a couple years past the expiration. Soaked em over night in water in the fridge and at first i tried to do em in the pressure cooker for 40 min and that barely even softened them up, then i put in a slow cooker overnight and they still would not cook ! ANd i had those stored in a cool dark place the whole time but in the bag they came in so perhaps that was the mistake.

one more thing, I had several fruit and vegetable packages that are freeze-dried. Inedible. Just plain Inedible. I think I would have eaten the packaging in an emergency before I would have eaten the actual foods inside them.

The most recent episode of Hoaders had a guy that was holding on to 42 year old Mountain House preps. He was finally persuaded it was bad and he got rid of it.

Re: IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO PREPPER and PEOPLE WHO STOCKPILE COMMERCIAL FOODS FROM COMPANIES
I don't know if anything like this has been posted before but for the last few weeks I have been cleaning out things around here and on those things is my food stash. Mind you, I have been stashing food for about 10 years. I have foods from several different companies.

As a side note let me just throw this in their real quick: I had a three month supply from a company that I received about seven or eight years ago and it had been stashed under my bed. I threw it out.

One more sidenote: I used to work for one of the major storable food companies. I used to sell this stuff to customers. Now I feel like I have jilted them.

So back to what I was saying, as I began clearing out things I started selling and throwing things out. What really struck me is how much of the food had actually gone "bad".

Almost all of the foods from EFoods and My Patriot Supply were bad. What I mean by bad? Let me explain:

Upon opening the bag the contents were a bit discolored. Well maybe that's part of the natural aging process and they're still actually edible, so I go to prepare them. Potato soup is gross. Cheesy broccoli and rice, gross. Granola, rancid. Cheesy potato soup was tolerable. Creamy chicken and rice, let's not go there. Tasted like ass.
.
I mean you can still live on the stuff I guess, but is this really what peole paid for? Weren't we told that these foods would keep for 25 years? I'm calling BS.

I mean after all their dehydrated freeze-dried so they're supposed to retain their viability right?

I'm going to go dig some more and experiment some more and document some more. I really believed in the products that I was selling to customers. I swear to God I hope that this is not common because if it is I have this crap on my conscience.

Please check your own stash, or if you already have and have found out that your foods suck and you had to throw them away or get rid of them, respond and let me know.

The companies that I have foods from are:

EFoods
My Patriot Supply ( think they changed the foods from Patriot Pantry to Ready Hour or something like that.)

Wise, who I think is now under Readywise.
Emergency Essentials.
Food4Patriots
Auguson Farms

I tried a five year old top ramin not long ago as a test. No way anyone could eat that, if they did surly they would get sick.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 67789290

Ramen is fried in oil. Oil goes rancid. Packaged Ramen only lasts 6-8 months
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79367141

Same for granola and other cereals anything with oils in it shelf life is at most 10 years for commercial canned.
Get whole grain seeds to store and a grinder.

Proper storage is not under your bed @75+ degrees! Storage life is half or less!

Proper storage is 65d f or less. My daughters boy friend had some in the attic for years in So Cal fucken bricks built a fire pit out of them!

Same for batteries I use hundreds of deep cycle batts for emergency power and if not installed in a temperature controlled area with the temp @65d f, the warranty is void! nota zip on $100s of thousands of dollars worth replaced every year or two!!!!

Get your basic food storage from ProvidentLiving.org many things for long term food storage for $1 ish a pound.
450,000 calories 600 pounds for $600 and store it properly!
It is only basic food... rice beans oats pasta!

Most of my stored will expire in 2040 I will be 75 and wont care anymore!

Cold storage we built on the back of the house shade side or north, poured a 4x12 ft slab, built 3 walls one with a door out of large decorative rock apx 1 ft, Extended roof and doubled the roof up 31/2 or a 2x4 on edge so water rain runs thru it then sheeted with ply and roofed to shade the roof, the only cooling is a small AC unit that runs when needed that's when it is 100+ entire job $600. Close to 50k in food stored. Those freeze dried entrees are not cheep @ $3-5 a serving about 10k servings on hand. Mostly Augaston Farms!

We have sampled many and we always find that it is ok in a emergency we would eat it! We did learn a few things like the augastons veg stew or soups will make a great meal extender as 10 servings of their soup stew and one can of regular canned soup like progresso makes all the difference in the world!!!!

Of course, but that's not the point of my post.

The point of my post is to get feedback from people who have purchased foods from the big commercial emergency foods companies and have had bad experiences with it after having it stored for several years.

I got a bunch of cans of pinto beans from a friend who buys a lot of food from warehouses and other places and ends up with way too much. They buy by the pallet.

I get food from them from time to time and I check the dates randomly but didn't think about checking this time. I ate one of the cans of beans and it seemed great. I started looking at the dates on the cans and they went back as far as 2011 and 2012. I was shocked. I don't think my friend noticed the dates.

I threw them all away but am kicking myself for doing that because they still seemed great. I was honestly surprised I didn't get food poisoning. But they were honestly very good.

Aren’t you just better off buying canned ok goods from the grocery store and storing them at room temp or better? Cheaper too? Bagged rice, dried milk too etc. ....?

^THIS!^ Cheaper too.

Tested mine today. The spaggetios, ravioli, and ramen were all fine.

I've had good luck with regular old dry goods & canned goods!

Spam 5 years beyond the expiration date was perfect.

Dry pasta & white rice is still perfect after 12 years. I didn't even store them in any special way...just in the box/bag they came in.

CB hash & Campbells soups years beyond the expiration date were fine (except one can). One can smelled kind of "tinny" so I didn't take the chance.

A good smell check when opening the can will tell you everything you need to know.

"I have had customers in tears because they were so scared, I have had people so worried about the future and how to protect your family and their children that they were scrounging from wherever they could just to get a few dollars to take advantage of some special that we were advertising. People were putting their last dollar into storable foods."

This makes me cringe. Great thread OP! Look, folks, regardless of whether or not you think buying stored food is the correct way of prepping, a lot of people are buying these foods. They are not cheap to buy. And people buy them with a lot of expectations - i.e. that they are doing something safe and responsible for their families.

I think it is important to compile a list of good and bad experiences with these companies and foods.

Also, a lot of people here are mentioning that you have to store these items in optimal conditions. How many people know this? I mean having to store something in constantly stable sub 72 degree, non-humid environment, would be a daunting task for those of us who live in humid and hot cities.

I dunno, I think this needs more airing out and less "this isn't the right way to prep, guys" sermonizing.

Beans and rice never go bad. Orchards never go bad. Fish ponds never go bad. Wild game never goes bad. Perennial beds never go bad. Canned meat lasts for decades. Seeds last for decades if stored properly. Do it right.

Try to cook and eat old beans. They will not get soft even after soaking and cooking for days.

You have to add baking soda to them. Then warm the water and let them soak.

I agree it's a pita.
 Quoting: Fluffy Pancakes

Beans that are old have undergone calcification, that’s why they won’t soften. The baking soda tip is a good one. It’s also possible to cook calcified beans in a pressure cooker. However, this is dangerous, as if the beans expand or get lodged in the juggler or pressure relief, the pressure can build uncontrollably until the cooker ruptures!

I'm not talking canned here, I am talking dehydrated and freeze dried that is supposed to last and it's not.

I never trusted that stuff.

Canned only or dry goods like pasta/rice.

I don't bother thinking of storing wheat flour long term. Just some masa harina. Best is a store of wheat berries and a means to grind them into flour.

I have found that the smell test works with most foods. If it smells bad don't eat it.
