“When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, then you may eat grapes until you are fully satisfied, but you shall not put any in your basket&
If you enter your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any in your basket.(Deuteronomy 23:24)

So you can work hard in the hot sun trying to grow your grapes but you dont always get to harvest ALL of it. Because your neighbour can just enter your vineyard and eat till he's full without being considered a thief.

Sure, he can't take any grapes with him in a basket, but he can still eat grapes for free everyday without paying for it.

That passage is basically saying the person who works is expected to feed the one who doesn't work.

Isn't that unfair to the grape farmer? And can't it be taken advantage of by greedy or lazy neighbors who want free stuff?

How exactly is this law supposed to work?

Not sure but we raided our neighbors peach and plum orchard lots of times growing up. They finally talked to us and asked for first dibs on their trees but we were welcome to any left after they harvested. Lots of happy times those were. hf

Good way to end up full of buckshot.
Neighbor or not, steal my produce and you’ll be fertilizing next years crop.

More proof the Bible is full of lies and contradictions.

Thou shalt not steal...

Deprive another to fill your desire.

And my neighbors kiss my ass because they know me, what I have done for our country, and my relationship with God. I would freely give all they ask for in the light of day. Steal from me, and there is no mercy.

Feel however you want about that, it won’t change the outcome.

it isn't, to a non-leftist.

Gleaning the remainder of crops was the way the poor kept themselves alive. Ruth and Naomi story has this in it.

LOOTING is filling your basket, stealing. Prohibited then as now, filthy BLM.

putting a handful of grapes into your mouth was self-preservation in Biblical times.

Leviticus 19:10-11 talks about leaving some of the crop for the poor. That's fine.

But Deuteronomy 23:24 is saying a "neighbor" can walk into your vineyard and eat till he's satisfied.

There's nothing in the bible that puts a limit on how many times a day your neighbour can eat from your vines.

Im guessing it's contextual, and preceding paragraphs were in relatiom to neighborly protocol when visiting/invited.

I.e. when you go to a barbeque (and normally you would bring something), but if the host offers you lots of sausages, it's saying it's ok to eat them...even as many as you want.

But it's crossing the line of decency to capitalize on your host's generosity by taking them home (in a basket) if you have had your fill.

I don't think that law permits one to eat his neighbours crops as and when he feels like it.

It's just saying that if you happen to pass through his vineyard you may eat some grapes if you really feel like it. It doesn't mean you should make it a daily habit.

God judges us by our intentions. "Clever" people who twist the law or look for loopholes to benefit themselves will be judged.
