Because your neighbour can just enter your vineyard and eat till he's full without being considered a thief. Sure, he can't take any grapes with him in a basket, but he can still eat grapes for free everyday without paying for it. That passage is basically saying the person who works is expected to feed the one who doesn't work. Isn't that unfair to the grape farmer? And can't it be taken advantage of by greedy or lazy neighbors who want free stuff? How exactly is this law supposed to work?  |

There's nothing in the bible that puts a limit on how many times a day your neighbour can eat from your vines. |

I.e. when you go to a barbeque (and normally you would bring something), but if the host offers you lots of sausages, it's saying it's ok to eat them...even as many as you want. But it's crossing the line of decency to capitalize on your host's generosity by taking them home (in a basket) if you have had your fill. |

It's just saying that if you happen to pass through his vineyard you may eat some grapes if you really feel like it. It doesn't mean you should make it a daily habit. God judges us by our intentions.
