You're obviously triggered by my thread, screaming in all caps because we have found an old rocket that was launched away from earth more than 50 years ago and has finally come back around the sun and is returning to earth orbit. It all traces back to when it first left Earth in September 1966 and it proves we went a lot farther than the atmosphere, even back then, just as NASA said. I pity you, it must suck to see your entire worldview crumbling before your eyes from such a simple discovery. |

Its orbit around the sun is curiously similar to Earth's orbit and integrating the orbit backwards shows that it was in Earth orbit back in September 1966. Quoting: Astromut [link to orbitsimulator.com] That was when an Atlas Centaur sent the Surveyor 2 mission to the moon. It was supposed to softly land on the moon's surface, but a problem with a mid course correction sent it slamming into the moon instead. It will enter an unstable orbit around Earth for a few months before it likely drifts off back into solar orbit. [link to orbitsimulator.com] Special thanks to Tony Dunn for this orbit analysis. Well genius, if it crashed into the moon, WTF is it still doing in flying around in space? Edit: Sonic is the Rocket that sent up and not the surveyor itself. Poorly written thread by Astro. Well genius, if it crashed into the moon, WTF is it still doing in flying around in space? The object is the Centaur upper stage that sense surveyor to the moon, just as I said. Surveyor is a separate spacecraft that was released from the centaur and crashed on the moon. The upper stage of the rocket continued on into solar orbit past the moon. Maybe before insulting me you should do your research. Otherwise try not to ask your question so sarcastically. |

I'll be tracking an imaging it as it swings by earth on its temporary orbit. If I see it there and confirm that it really did originate from earth in 1966 based on its orbit, what will your excuse be? That I just made it all up too? Any amateur with the appropriate equipment can track and verify this object's origin and what it really is. |

Are you really this stupid? By the way, 2020 SO is currently about 10 times farther away than the moon and its apparent magnitude is about 21.5. That's about as dim as you should expect astronomers to be able to discover new solar system objects, but a "second sun" anywhere near the known planets would be thousands of times brighter than that. |

Quoting: Doctor Congo No. It will be much too far to resolve as more than a point-like light source at close approach. Too bad. And we won't be able to see if aliens have moved into the Centaur. It might be furnished and even repainted, and we will never know. LOL |

You mean a brown dwarf? Yes, I would. It would reflect the sun's light like the gas giants do. also the orbit is fantastically large and not where astronomers would neatly want it to be. HAHA, I KNOW... you'll next be accused of being a reverse time traveler, peering in from the past to figure out orbital mechanics or maybe an advanced alien trying to fool earthlings with your orbital mechanics shenanigans, under the dome, above a flat Earth.... using a fish eye lens of course with sun dogs/flares.
