So it turns out that a newly discovered asteroid, 2020 SO, is not actually an asteroid at all. Its orbit around the sun is curiously similar to Earth's orbit and integrating the orbit backwards shows that it was in Earth orbit back in September 1966.

It was supposed to softly land on the moon's surface, but a problem with a mid course correction sent it slamming into the moon instead. It will enter an unstable orbit around Earth for a few months before it likely drifts off back into solar orbit.

You're obviously triggered by my thread, screaming in all caps because we have found an old rocket that was launched away from earth more than 50 years ago and has finally come back around the sun and is returning to earth orbit. It all traces back to when it first left Earth in September 1966 and it proves we went a lot farther than the atmosphere, even back then, just as NASA said. I pity you, it must suck to see your entire worldview crumbling before your eyes from such a simple discovery.

Edit: Sonic is the Rocket that sent up and not the surveyor itself. Poorly written thread by Astro.

The object is the Centaur upper stage that sense surveyor to the moon, just as I said. Surveyor is a separate spacecraft that was released from the centaur and crashed on the moon. The upper stage of the rocket continued on into solar orbit past the moon. Maybe before insulting me you should do your research. Otherwise try not to ask your question so sarcastically.

It's kinda neat how our past space missions keep showing up in unexpected ways. Some people make it a hobby to track down lost satellites.

Oh, another tard who can't handle the truth. I'll be tracking an imaging it as it swings by earth on its temporary orbit. If I see it there and confirm that it really did originate from earth in 1966 based on its orbit, what will your excuse be? That I just made it all up too? Any amateur with the appropriate equipment can track and verify this object's origin and what it really is.

Yup, that's the plan. It will be far too dim to see by eye, but it should be easily visible to my telescope by late November when it will be in earth orbit.

so do I understand this correctly or to put in layman's terms..

astronomers are still struggling with orbits of objects in our solar system but most of them defacto believe that we do not have a binary sun system here?

Are you really this stupid? You don't understand the difference between trying to see a tiny upper stage of a rocket when it's many times farther from earth the moon and trying to see a "second sun" near the known planets?

By the way, 2020 SO is currently about 10 times farther away than the moon and its apparent magnitude is about 21.5. That's about as dim as you should expect astronomers to be able to discover new solar system objects, but a "second sun" anywhere near the known planets would be thousands of times brighter than that.

no I'm not and a dark star you are not going to see it..

also the orbit is fantastically large and not where astronomers would neatly want it to be.
