Anonymous Coward User ID: 77062778 09/23/2020 12:18 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know it's silly, but apparently a group claiming to be CBS said it was 6 miles wide. Shrug. Better to get out in front of it than to let it fester. Quoting: Astromut Okay, now I totally get your MO. I pretty much thought that was the case from the beginning, but I bet some doomtards are going to seize on this thread as a sign you're somehow getting nervous about DOOM! LOL. I wish more people like you were put in charge of things like anti-Covid-19, climate change, the NFL, etc. The idiocy and conniving out there in the bigger world blows me away. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 51514852 lol, less then 1%, but I do suppose it is possible. I suppose give the people what they want, no? :) This is how Astro trolls. Jokes on you guys. If you watched his video, you would know he basically debunked it to the best of his ability with current equipment. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 4812794 United States 09/23/2020 12:26 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My previous calculations of asteroid 2018 VP1 agree with NASA's assessment that there is a non-zero but still very small (less than a 1%) chance that this asteroid will hit earth this November. ] Quoting: Astromut Neil Degrasse Tyson says it is 'refrigerator sized'. That would be one HELL of a big fridge!!! . |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 72541489 United States 09/23/2020 12:30 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Tomorrow night I'll also be tracking the close approach of 2020 SW, if the weather allows. It's another small asteroid, and it will be passing just about 28,000 km from the center of the earth. That's closer than our geostationary satellites. Check back tomorrow for that! (OP) Senior Forum Moderator 09/23/2020 12:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The gist of it?: bigger than originally thought but still not going to hit. Right? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79399667 No, As mentioned in the video it's not possible to rule out the possibility of impact. It is possible to set upper limits on the size that are way smaller than 6 miles. Those are upper limits, that's it, it doesn't mean that it's actually larger than originally thought. In reality though, a size of only a few feet wide means that it's not going to be practical to detect it prior to the potential impact. |

User ID: 1230035 United States 09/23/2020 12:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Let's see if it's true that it's actually 6 miles wide, and let's see if it's on course for an impact with earth! Quoting: Astromut You're the only person at GLP who I make an effort to focus on when it comes to astronomical info. Everyone else is full of bullshit and superstition. For you, this thread makes me think of one titled with something like, "Is Santa Claus Really Living in the North Pole?" Or "Does the Easter Bunny Really Lay Candy Eggs?" I know it's silly, but apparently a group claiming to be CBS said it was 6 miles wide. Shrug. Better to get out in front of it than to let it fester. CERN lost a microscopic black hole once, not that it's any big deal.... Goodbye, halcyon days... There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened. |
Midwest Skeptic User ID: 79096761 United States 09/23/2020 12:47 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Seems to be awfully big and coming awfully close for it not to have been in the Astronomy News BIG TIME over the last few weeks. I respect your posts OP, you are NOT a doom type of person when it comes to these claims, but still, it just doesn't "smell right", unless of course there has been a concerted and organized LONG TERM effort to "cover up" the incoming object, which is doubtful. If true ... well "PANIC" will suddenly occur once the news becomes publicly widespread when reported by the MSM. REAL PANIC. Panic like no one here has ever seen. 6 miles wide, if true and IF it would hit, is clearly a ELE for MOST humans on the planet. For any survivors our industrialized and complex society would certainly undergo a sudden, complete, and total collapse with all that would entail. |
