Am I the only one who finds intense pain to be humorous?
After starting the project of replacing a deck on my house three months ago, I have finally finished.

I was four nails away from being done. It was getting dark outside, and I was tired.

Long story short--I smashed my thumb with the hammer.

I knew immediately, that it was going to be bad, so I started inside.

I got a cup of ice water to put my thumb in.

The pain from this injury was ridiculous. It was so terrible, that I started to laugh at how bad it was.

Is this normal?

Does anyone else here ever laugh at how bad something hurts?

That's a defensive reaction, used to show you aren't in a weakened state, even if you really are.

It's mainly seen in men, and sort of works, in the natural world.

It isn't "humorous" as much as an autonomic reaction. You wouldn't wish for a comedy show made of this response, right?

If that were the case, it would be a mental illness.

This is often referred to as a "pain laugh".
