Rock and Rule (1983, 1987) / an obscure post-apocalyptic animated rock & roll film!
This passed into my radar field a few days ago. It is a very obscure animated movie with demons and satansim apparently?

I haven't been able to find a good copy of the movie yet, though I didn't look *that* hard yet.

It looks like the Canadian release is the one to get, as there seems to have been some censorship with other versions. Has anyone seen this one before???

It looks like it flopped hard in theaters, barely making $30K on a budget of $8M. Ouch!

WARNING, may contain potentially "satanic" content. Also, please contact your doctor if you have an erection lasting longer than 4 hours.

So, after some diligent searching, here is the SUPERIOR Canadian version of the full film. It has a drastically different introduction!

Another time...

Another place.

MOK, a legendary superocker
has retired to OHMTOWN, a remote
storm ravaged village famous
for its unique powerplant.

It is here that he lays his plans
for his comeback -

a great and final performance
that will secure his immortality.

High in the hills above OHMTOWN,
MOK's computers work at deciphering
an ancient satanic code
which could unlock a doorway between
his world and a
darker dimension
while MOK himself searches for the last
crucial component -

a very special voice.
 Quoting: Rock and Rule (Canadian)

(Thanks to JoeNobHead for finding this version on the Tube!) greenkarmagreenkarma

Compare with the neutered and emaciated US release hack:

The War was over...

The only survivors were
street animals: dogs, cats and rats.

From them, a new race of mutants
evolved.

That was a long time ago.

MOK, a legendary superocker
has retired to OHMTOWN. There
his computers work on deciphering
an ancient code
which would unlock a doorway between
this world and
another dimension.

Obsessed with his dark experiment,
MOK himself searches for the last
crucial component

a very special voice.
 Quoting: Rock and Rule (US)

This movie has music from Cheap Trick and Debbie Harry from Blondie, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, and more!

Here is a rare extended version of one song with Debbie which people had been searching for years:

..and here's an awesome Cheap Trick track from the movie:

Here is a decent write-up of the film:

[link to nightflight.com]

It seems that an original widescreen cut of the film (maybe the Canadian version?) was lost in a fire, so I'm curious as to what the 2017 Blu-Ray release actually contains.

The old VHS copies looked to command some high prices as the film was developing into cult status.

Here's an old trailer :)

Reminds me a bit of a poor man's Heavy Metal (which is absolutely awesome BTW)

Well, I used some net-fu after getting home from work, and I found a 1080p torrent of this movie (not too hard to find), but I'm not sure yet if it is the original Canadian version. (crossing fingers)

There's also what looks like possibly a lower quality copy on the Internet Archive for posterity. I'm still going to dig around a bit and see what else turns up.

edit: haven't tested to see if this works, but there was a mention of someone going to attempt to upload the movie to VEOH, and it looks like it is still there: [link to www.veoh.com (secure)]

Ah, so you saw the "real" version of it. Everything that I'm finding, even up to Blu-Ray remasters is all the edited shit, totalilng 77 minutes..

It seems pretty hard to find the actual "original" version, especially since the master was lost in a fire, apparently.

With the edited version, a character was completely overdubbed with someone else, and a lot of "adult" references have been removed. That's a shame, because it seems like this Canadian broadcast version is almost the superior one...

edit: I'm actually going to watch this Blu-Ray remaster in just a few minutes.

Well boys, I FOUND IT!

I watched the English 'hacked' version last night, (excellent video restoration and transfer BTW) but later I found an incredibly decent copy of the 'real' Canadian version, and WOW does it show its superiority, even in the first few seconds of the intro... (its the small things that really count.)

For one, the intro is vastly longer and it actually makes sense, instead of replacing it with something asinine about cats, rats, and dogs; obviously that change was to attempt to explain the characters oddities (probably due to confused screening audiences), but WTF...crucial story material was omitted here!!

I don't think anyone out there is seeding this proper, so I may have to step up to the plate here.

It's not THAT obscure. Come on, maaaan! I used to rent it from the video store. Feisty rock lovers against the big evil rock star Mok, voiced by Iggy Pop. His theme song is by Lou Reed and is pretty rad actually. Edit: Found out Iggy only did some songs, not the speaking voice.

Yes there's minutes of deleted scenes in here, I'm comparing the two side-by-side and it deviates very quickly; deleted "sex" scenes, drug use, the works! There are also some cuts spliced in that were not mastered, so it's all here...probably the best thing surving of the lost original workprint. (This seems to be a 1.85 anamophic and not a shitty pan-and-scan.)

The original opens with a longer text intro and mentions an "ancient satanic code" and a quest for immortality.

The animation is like a strange mix of Don Bluth and Ralph Bakshi...keeping the Bakshi-esque undertones (ala Fritz the Cat) but there's also this hint of an MTV Liquid Television vibe, like how the original "Aeon Flux" series debuted there..

A little different than I remember, seems shorter.

Not the same caliber as Heavy Metal, but it has its moments.

Mok sure looks like Steven Tyler does now.

Another of that genre is American Pop.

Yeah, the unedited version runs about 4 minutes longer. The most "edgy" and non-PG stuff was removed. This was back when there was no PG-13 rating, so the line between PG and R was pretty big..

I believe that's a Don Bluth movie, the guy who did Ftitz the Cat and other notable u.g. animation. As I recall he did the animated (never really and properly finished) Lord of the Rings movie from the 80s, the one that ends as the group meets the Balrog. Until Peter Jackson's version it was the only thing close to a decent interpretation of the LOTR books. Also he did the 80s videodisc 'games' Dragon's Lair and Space Ace.
