Wow..Growing swarm of earthquakes in Southern California..latest is a 5.0

I know; I saw that one and first saw the 6.7 and was like HOLY HELL the main shock in California...then I saw it was in Tonga.

Hopefully that one was far enough from population to do any damage, and not large enough for a Tsunami. That area has been shaking for awhile...aftershocks from something awhile ago; wonder if this is a new earthquake or aftershock

Last hour 9 quakes over 3.0 in Westmorland area!

Evidently there was a big swarm in the area in 1981 with the largest in the sequence being a 5.8. Of course, whether or not that is the largest the area can produce, hard to say. This thread has more info:

Looks like it wants to unzip going south to north.

Still a ton of small quakes in the swarm this last hour, but only 1 over 3.0

So possibly slowing down a bit. Still, not exactly stable ground at the moment.

Yes, they have increased in the Salton Sea area in the past few days. Just south of the Salton Sea are the towns of Westmoreland and Brawley. This is where the small quakes are swarming, including the 4.9 centered in Westmoreland.

A few things - they are occurring very near the San Andreas fault. It is said that there is a deep magma flow beneath this area that flows up to Yellowstone. The planes collided mid air in this area yesterday. There are bases in this area. Always many helicopters when I drive through here.
Not sure if any of it related. The Salton Sea area has had many swarms in the past couple of decades.

Bonus because Halloween is in a month - I heard rumors 20 years ago that the Salton Sea is actually a ocean vent from the underground shelf that goes inland from the coast. On a brighter note, land is really cheap in this area.

Another 4.5 just now. I had the settings at one day all magnitudes for US, then zoomed in on California.

Swarm from couple weeks ago has nothing on this. Just had another one, looks like 4-4.5.

It’s super hot there too.

So hot. Was in the 100s in DTLA, must be insane out at Salton.

Redlands,CA here. Been anticipating a large quake for the last month and a half, something is coming for sure it would seem. This is the second swarm in that area in the last month.

Today is the last day of September, I watched that autistic guy named Frankie who says a large quake was supposed to happen in September 2020, but we will see.

Wow; here they come again! Another 7 (!) over 3.0 in the last 40 minutes, including 1 over 4,0

Huge number of quakes that can be felt on the surface in the swarm.

I’m in north OC and haven’t felt any today, but I was too busy all day to notice. We did have a 5.0 about a week ago out in the desert that I felt. I don’t get outta bed unless it’s north of a 6. It is earthquake weather-ish today, hot but not as dry as what we traditionally call earthquake weather. Our 6 month old cat is going batshit crazy, maybe that’s a sign to hang on tight.

Ah, good luck; I hope it doesn’t end in a large quake. Yeah, when I lived in California, I was pretty good up to about a 5.5; if that was close I’d get in a doorway since I didn’t know how big it would get.

But then, I got caught near the epicenter of the Northridge Quake and found out you couldn’t actually GET to a doorway in a really violent quake.
