They are lied about and propagandized about 24/7 by the owners of America. The domestic issues that separate the parties are not important to the power structure. They only exist to keep the American people firmly in one of two camps, Republican or Democrat. Third party candidates are crushed with both parties working together to do so. The reason why things are so hyper-partisan now is that they have realized that a sizable group of the population has discovered what is going on and has exited the fake two-party system.
