Do farmers still grow tobacco in Tennessee ?

When I was growing up back in the 70’s and early 80’s, burley tobacco fields were everywhere! I even worked one over summer break when I was going to college (hardest manual labor I’ve ever done, including construction).

Now we very very rarely see any tobacco being grown. Seems like most farmers in our area grow cotton and field corn.

It’s a shame. I come from a long line of burley tobacco farmers on both sides.

I don't currently have cigarettes to barter, mainly because I don't smoke and don't want to wast freezer space keeping them fresh.

But cartons of cigs would be one of the things I would buy if I was afforded a last minute buying spree before/during a SHTF scenario. Other items include:

- Booze
- Pipe tobacco
- Coffee
- Candy/Chocolate
- Batteries

All of these would be just for barter

The “sin economy” always flourishes!

I’m thinking cigs, cigars, some small bottlers of whiskey, etc.

Any thoughts?

I’m conflicted on trading booze and/or ammunition. I don’t want to give the ‘other team’ anything that might make them do something stupid. On the other hand we keep some liquor for medicinal purposes.

It was tough to start in central TX, but i guess it adapted, cuz now the seeds grow readily here. Not Those huge burley leaves, only about as big as cabbage leaf.
Maybe i created a new strain. They get about 5-6ft tall.
Curing them properly is the problem now.

Ammunition definitely not, unless it is something like 22LR to a neighbor for hunting. But even then I would be cautious.

I think booze will be one of the first things people start to manufacture after things start to get back on track, so that might be a moot point.

Great point! Some of these ole boys around here will most definitely have stills fired up and running. Hadn’t thought of that.

First aid kits. Bought them for $10 one year gave them for Christmas.

Knives, nails, screws, duct tape, tarps, rope, candles, lamp oil, bug repellent ...

All pretty cheap and mundane stuff until you can't get it.

Once the hardware store is looted, then what?

I had to stop to get my lungs good and clean. I LOVED smoking but I decided a few years ago I’d rather start jogging and distance running. To be honest I can breathe much better, and I’m not disparaging anyone who smokes :-)

10 lbs of loose tobscco...red river brand....100 pks of bugler rolling papers

I don't buy the red river brand, not that it is bad, but because that's the brand that Crazy Nancy Pelosi chews. I like Stocker's Classic.

Wow...didnt know that..i wish you wouldn't have told me.

When its in season its really good and not expensive..some months its a hit dry upon opening..

Its a domestic blend if you get the red label.....most are Turkish tobacco which is a bit smoother hut far less nicotine.

No. The way I've been posting, Mossad is going to come kill me in my sleep soon and have told me as much. So there's no point in me stockpiling barter goods.

Still don't believe their stupid holocaust story.

Having read some of the things people in Serbia and Kosovo had to do and trade for during the war - I've been prepping for things they found valuable. One item was especially valuable for barter - lighters. You can get 100 in bulk on Amazon for $17.00.
