I'm in a Canadian province with a mask-wearing compliance rate of nearly 100% but only two (2) active cases of covid in a population of around a million.

I can't and therefore won't wear a mask. Even if I could wear a mask, I wouldn't. This has caused me some degree of inconvenience and stress, but life goes on for the time being. Instead of taking public transit, I walk or take a cab. Instead of shopping every day, I go only once every few weeks to cut down on the "why aren't you wearing a mask" confrontations.

Not being able to wear a mask in an environment where mask-wearing is mandated, widespread, and considered a social virtue is as exhausting as wearing a mask. I am grilled at store entrances. I am glared at by shoppers. I am given a wide berth in the few stores that I do venture into. Mothers pull their children closer to them when they see me coming down the aisle. Young children stare at me like I'm a circus freak. I have been kicked out of a Marriott hotel as a paid guest for not being able to wear a mask. I am alienated from my family for not wearing a mask, though the alienation is my choice; I can't stand being around compliant sheep. I will buy from sheep or sell to sheep, but I won't spend my time with sheep.

The division between those who are mask-compliant and those who are not is deep and unbridgeable.
