Labrador training: Tips/Help needed please!
Howdy guys and dolls,

We got an 11 month old Labrador that is a rescue. She knows sit, stay, and shake already. Oh, also she’s house broken and crate trained.

We got her because she’s a good sized dog and family friendly.

Here’s what we need help with:

Alerting.

Any odd noise that’s close to the house, any knocks on any doors or windows, any suspicious noise? Bark like hell.

She’s pretty laid back so I need tips.

Understand: we’re not trying to get her to attack anything unknown necessarily, we just want her to give a loud vocal alert / bark.

TIA!

Females are more laid-back.

That being said, just excite them every time someone knocks the door or ring the bell.

"Who's that??"
"Get 'em!"
etc.

Normally they should do that all by themselves over time when they're conditioned to the sounds, don't worry.

Awesome! cheers

Currently we’re taking turns sneaking out and knocking on a door a few minutes later. When/if she barks, she gets major praise and a treat.

She just defending her territory, my dog was attacked when we left our house about 6 months ago by an unleashed dog.
Ever since then he goes mad when other dogs walk by or foxes and cats too. I also have to be very careful when we leave the house for a walk when other dogs are walking past the house as he will go for them. This has all started since he was attacked, he is 14 months old now and a huge dog too

Labs are just happy happy happy!!! ANy noise she is hearing, she probably thinks someone is there to see HER LOL!!

It's a new place, she should settle down with time. Try the "settle" command and when she chills, give her a treat right then...EVERY TIME.

Labs are super smart, and the best dogs EVER!!!

Enjoy :)

Oh sorry i read that she barked, anyways, she probably won't have that guarding nature in her like other big dogs, you can train her.
Go in and out of the house a few times in an aggressive manner

My lab barks like a junkyard dog, we live on a corner so he has two views to see people and anything stroll by. He did not bark like this when he was a pup, he developed into a barker. Drives me crazy but he’s a great watchdog

Nice! I can get an unknown-to-her family member to suddenly show up and charge in. We’ll keep her leashed and would reward any aggressive reaction.

Looked like it may be helpful for what you are trying to accomplish. :)

When we had our precious Rottweiler, we took him to dog training at an armory that was holding classes for a reasonable fee. The classes were excellent and he turned out to be highly trainable and one heck of a guard dog.

Best of luck to you and your new pup! hf

Young labs can be a handful. Best way to keep the calm is to wear them out at the park. They need lots of exercise.

Oh yeah and Labs are watch dogs by nature, not guard dogs. It's literally their programmed job to alert, so keep that in mind.

I like to hear this! Maybe with a little training we can push ours in this direction.

Honestly I don’t care if she barks anytime around zero dark thirty. With a looming depression, I want a living friend whose job is to love, protect and warn!

cheers
