Re: Would you be an English teacher in Japan?
I worked in SK. $90 flights using peach airlines from Incheon airport to Kansai airport for a couple days wandering around the streets of Osaka. Did that half a dozen times. Climbed tons of mountains while in SK. Rode a bike from Seoul to Busan countless times. Being a white celebrity everywhere I went (the real white privilege is in Asia). 6ft with blue eyes and muscular, I was dating girls way out of my league back in Canada, but in SK, I couldn't get them to leave me alone.

Every other week a little mini vacation. I think with East Asia everything is different. The washrooms, the restaurants, the mannerisms, the etiquette, the seasonings, the music, everything is different. The temples, the clothing styles, even shit that is supposed to be the same is way different like McDonalds. Whereas, as a Westerner if I travel someone in Canada or America, no matter where I go its really the same. Maybe the main attraction is unique but the thrill is gone. Going on a train ride at 400km an hour and having an old asian lady offer you a hard boiled egg and she wont take no for an answer. Plus, with places like Korea you are literally a couple hundred bucks away from another country by plane and everywhere is so safe you can literally walk anywhere at any hour and you are the one scaring people.

Man you hit the nail on the head. Every single person I talked to says the same thing. I put away some money from my programming job and am heading back to China. I convinced my wife. Canada is just too boring, and way too expensive to have an adventure. Canada is where you go when you are ready to die, good benefits and healthcare. No wonder so many Chinese people have empty homes in BC and Toronto. It's just boring. Some might say Canada is not boring.. But then you gotta ask: Have you been to HK or Shanghai or Seoul or Osaka or Tokyo? Just remember, no dogs or English teachers.

The best English Teacher jobs in japan arent in schools but Companies. They do NOT want people with english degrees or college dumbasses. They want people from the streets and. Ountry side. You just hang out and people talk to you. A friends wife was getting 10k usd a month plus expenses back in the 80s. She was not a high school grad.

My Friend did that... and ended up in a not very good marriage with a Japanese lady.
I assume he has by now worked himself to death dealing with all the issues. I hope not though.

Re: Would you be an English teacher in Japan?
Assistant Language Teachers often have to travel distances on short notice and the pay isn't enough to rent a minimum quality apartment. Some schools expect you to stay long hours without any overtime pay. Don't feel bad, some Japanese employees are treated this way too.

Language School Teachers at most schools are "gig workers" which means they only get paid for the hours they are teaching. The school gets paid half. 2,200 yen is the maximum most get paid for 60 minutes and most don't even get that. The school charges students 2,500 yen for 40 minutes. See the scam? Schools offer zero benefits, no paid sick days, no paid vacation, no bonuses. Some aren't even offering to reimburse for commuting on the school which is the reason why long time teachers are going freelance.

Some schools teach children which means you're not actually teaching English, you're just babysitting and the pay isn't worth it.

For these reasons, most teachers leave Japan after a short time. Japan has a shortage of teachers right now so they are really advertising. But I'm warning you why.

Now for some stuff that will start to irritate you quickly. Japan is not really the country you think it is.

Things that even people in poor countries have like a garbage disposal and a clothes dryer, Japanese don't have. Japan is not really a clean country. The floors of many restaurants are dirty. The aprons of many food handlers are filthy.

Japanese women that look nice are trying to get a Japanese husband. I've noticed in the last 2 decades that many are getting chubby and saggy thanks to McDonald's and now only a few brands of Kellogg's cereal.

Kanji is really difficult to learn. It will take you decades to master it and you really need to be able to read Kanji or you are helpless in doing basic things like renting an apartment and buying food.

I hope you like Japanese food because Japan doesn't import but a few western foods like some brands of cereal. They also import Chinese Snickers. That's about it.

Japanese streets without sidewalks are really dangerous and people get hit all the time. They will also flee. There are at least 3 dead English teachers who were hit walking or bicycling on Japanese streets and killed and all the drivers haven't been caught.

I have (with dread) taught un-disciplined spoiled brats for 2 weeks in a private school.

The big problem was the SPOILED BRATS. Since Japanese kids are not that way, it ought to not be too bad. But absent that NEVER AGAIN.

Why would you want being associated to brands like that? Interac is the type of black company. I speak in future to some of their teachers maybe help their, but no person would ever hire anyone associated to the manage ments of this type of company. They are trash. Put them in trash can.
