What would they say? That the person who killed their daughter should get leniency? That would be weird, because he's facing life in prison, not the death penalty. Based on their public pleas for forgiveness of Bahena Rivera, I'm not sure if I were the prosecutor, I would put them on trial. (Maybe the defense attorneys would consider it...) ~Wharf Rat |

(OP) User ID: 79386534 United States 10/15/2020 04:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My big worry is that "enlightened" jurors will try to make a political statement by acquitting Bahena Rivera, to make up for the perceived "wrongs" our society has done to illegal immigrants, or people of color. My other concern is that somehow the prosecution will screw things up. I don't know how, maybe something procedural. But if we get an honest, thoughtful, and conscientious jury and a competent and meticulous prosecution, I don't see how twelve rational people wouldn't end up convicting him. ~Wharf Rat |

(OP) User ID: 79386534 United States 10/15/2020 07:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | What can the defense even be? That Mollie provoked him into a murderous rage? I'm sorry, but there is NO excuse for murdering somebody. Killing in self defense, maybe, but Bahena Rivera was the one with the murder weapon and Mollie Tibbetts was running with her iPod. I find it absolutely inconceivable she could have been considered a threat to his life, to use the justifiable homicide defense. But I wouldn't put it past the defense team to argue that her "white privilege" was somehow to blame, for enraging him. Depending on the jury pool, that could potentially have some play. It's disgusting, but consider the society we live in. I suspect the defense will try to make it seem like all the forensic evidence is misleading (ha!) and that it is "possible" that someone other than the defendant stabbed Mollie multiple times in the skull and chest with a sharp object. So the question is, how can the Prosecution present the case beyond reasonable doubt? ~Wharf Rat |

They are clearly sick, and when left without treatment, can do incredible damage, as they victimize those people around them. I'm familiar with Munchausen's by proxy Syndrome. Usually the parents try to milk the sympathy for as long as they can. Make their children/spouses sick, keep them sick, in order to gain sympathy. I don't think Mollie Tibbetts' mother orchestrated the killing of her daughter, if that's what you mean. And I seriously doubt that her adopting the son of illegal immigrants who worked with her daughter's killer would get her any sympathy, if that was her (subconscious) desire. Something like that is too disgusting to make anybody feel sorry for the mom... ~Wharf Rat |

User ID: 76716753 United States 02/18/2021 07:54 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Young women don’t get any justice in our society when they’re killed. So many stories in the true crime groups about young women who turn up dead, and everyone knows who did it, but either the guy is never charged, or he gets convicted and only serves a little time. It’s disgusting. This guy did it. He led police to the body and had her blood and hair in his trunk. He’s a monster, and yet he will keep his life and probably be okay in prison if he doesn’t get released. If he gets released he’ll do it again. Nobody has any balls in these sick times. IDGAF |

I think the appropriate punishment for this murderer would be to be run over by a steam roller, starting from the feet and moving to the head. At high noon in full public view. I don't have the time or the crayons to explain this to you. Slake Blake |

I know I should wait for the actual trial -- and inevitable sentencing -- but I'm really starting to wonder about whether life in prison or capital punishment is more suitable for these kinds of heinous crimes. My gut reaction was a lot like yours, Pilgrim001, but the more I think about it, maybe spending the next 60-100 years in solitary confinement might be better. But I really don't know. I don't want to count my chickens... the trial hasn't even started yet. ("And now we wait...") ~Wharf Rat |

I imagine he knew they had enough evidence. (Look at the wording of defense lol) "Even if properly given" Five stars, AC! I'm super curious how the defense team is going to try and defend this homicidal maniac. They are going to have a hard time brushing aside the confession and the forensic evidence--- HE LED THEM TO THE BODY! HE HAD HER BLOOD AND HAIR IN HIS CAR!.... All of which means.... (sigh)... they will probably try to impugn the officers themselves, i.e., dig up dirt from their past like the cop on the OJ case who used the N-word back in the 70's. "They're racists!" Also, anybody besides me wondering why the defense team was trying to access Mollie's bank records? What possible "evidence" or relevance could that have on the case? I expect the defense to do their share of victim blaming ("Mollie was racist!"), because the evidence that Bahena-Rivera was the killer is indisputable. The defense's only hope is to illicit sympathy from one of the twelve jurors... So I'm praying for a honest jury. I also pray for the state prosecutors, to give them patience and vision, and to avoid making any procedural mistakes which could result in... No, I'm not even going to say it. No jinxes.
