Feral Cat - anyone here successfully tamed an adult feral cat?
About a year ago some feral cats showed up on the farm. There's one left. She's had two litters. We took the kittens and adopted them out. She has been caught and fixed plus shots.

She hangs on my porch and plays with my indoor/outdoor cats. I feed her every day. She's bumped my finger a few times and once I touched her tail. She's still very skittish.

It's getting cold. Will she ever relent? Aside from feeding a 'wild animal' am I wasting my time trying to tame her?

maybe not "tame" but i think you can easily form a strong alliance. she will eventually learn to let the guard down.

cats are extremely intelligent dont you think?

well that's something. most of what I read from the 'experts' seems to point to it probably not happening.

she's come in the house before and eaten with my cats. with winter coming on I can't leave the door open so she can flee if I happen to look at her :)

I don't know how those cats survive the winter. It gets 15 below here and they have no access to shelter other than under porches and in random garages, but most of them seem to do okay.

I have done it more than once. It depends on the cat's personality--they are all different.

yes they are intelligent. i'd like to be able to let her in the house over the winter so she doesn't freeze w/out her panicking to get out if the door is closed. my two cats get along with her just fine.

they enjoy the free food and a safe place to relax.

but brining a feral cat into your house isn't going to be good for you or the cat.

If you give her time, she might come around. Problem is if they have not been held while they were a kitten, picking her up or bringing her inside, comfortably might be out of the question.

I'm kind of in the same situation with a Male. I know there is no way I'm going to get him in a crate much less having him behave for a vet to get fixed. He would come in if I let him but I'm deathly allergic. Like you said ..it's getting cold here shortly and that's a miserable condition to be in. He was so skinny and skiddish when he first came around now he's fat and lazy. I wish I could get him fixed and find him a home.

Re: Feral Cat - anyone here successfully tamed an adult feral cat?
Yes, but in the mean time, you could provide a heated shelter outside (some kind of small cat house), with a heating pad for the cat to lay on.

Keep two bowls of drinking water outside with new water each day, placed away from the food. Cats don't like their food and water to be near each other. And give cat a pinch catnip a few times a day. And you want the food and water bowls to be a ways from where they sleep, or other animals could bother the cat when they are looking for food.

i wasn't involved in that at all. i didn't start trying to get close to her until after that ordeal :)

Most cats are inbred retards. The ones that can survive in the wild and outlive two others while successfully carrying two litters clearly are not retards. I do not think you are wasting time with that one.

Yes, I’ve done it several times over the years. Cats will respond to kind, loving care. Takes a little time but they can learn to trust humans. Good luck and God bless you for your mercy. God sees that.

You’re not wasting your time. Get a cardboard box and put some blankets in and around it and start feeding her close to it so she sees her new bed. Keep bribing her with food and treats and working on petting her. It’ll take time. If you back porch/deck is something you can close once she’s inside then do that. She’ll understand your trying to give her a safe and warm spot to sleep for the night. Goodluck.

Re: Feral Cat - anyone here successfully tamed an adult feral cat?
I had a feral cat show up at my door at midnight one night when I went out to watch the Geminid meteor showers. A half-dozen bites, tons of scratches, a tetanus shot, and more than a year-and-a-half of house-training later, “Bucky” is sleeping peacefully beside my chair on his favorite footstool.

He will still run out the door if he spots a chance, but he always comes back within the hour. He has separation anxiety and follows me room to room like a dog. He watches and waits for me to come home if I go out for errands. He prefers to sleep outside on my screened in porch and he still eats like a pig. He loooooves for me to pet him now. He even lets me scratch under his chin and rub his tummy. A year ago I would have had a bloody stub for a hand, lol. He’s getting over his trust issues.

It’s been a pain to tame him but totally worth it now! 😺
