Watch Craigs List for free animals such as chickens and goats. I see them every two weeks or so. You can find baby dairy bulls extremely cheap or free as well. The only problem with those is that they are good for burger and soup bones, but not steaks. Calf liver is excellent.

You can learn to humanely slaughter and process them on utube. Many farms will allow you to kill the animal on site and process at home.

You could also put an ad on Craigs List for meat from hunters who don't want it. For example, wild hog hunters often have thousands of pounds of pork going to waste when they discard carcasses. I used to be on a deer lease with a guy who only wanted the horns for trophies. He let me have the rest of the deer.

I have a few acres and am retired on Social Security plus a small pension. We NEVER buy meat. I simply cull animals such as hens that have stopped laying eggs as well as surplus bulls.
