Cooking meals with LITTLE TO NO MEAT for a family, need your ideas! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 79450180 United States 10/17/2020 03:35 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Ok so our grocery budget has been cut in half, and prices keep going up. Quoting: we're poor! 79330195 I need ideas and recipes for making meat stretch for a family. We already do soups, stews and chili. Great budget meals! I've recently added fried rice to the meal rotation, fantastic way to make a lot of food with very little. Plus my kids love it. You can also stretch a 1lb package of Italian sausage into several meals: take half and mix into pasta sauce for spaghetti, freeze the other half to use for homemade pizza. Any other ideas from you good folks would be sincerely appreciated! Scrambled eggs, pork and beans, and fried potatoes. Try it, you might like it. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77646097 United States 10/17/2020 03:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | OP, I have never before in my life gone to a food bank other than to DONATE food. Lately, with the advent of COVID(fake) I have been to several mass Second Harvest distributions. I have received hundreds of dollars worth of food over the past four months consisting of canned goods, pasta, chocolate candy, fresh produce, coffee, milk, cheese, butter, meats, beans, breads. I have in my freezer 15 pounds of smoked hickory bacon, a 4 lb. beef roast, a frozen chicken, 3 lbs. of ground beef, a ham steak, and 12 Marie Callender turkey & stuffing pot pies. I also received a half dozen large cans of albacore tuna, and canned chicken. One time I received 6 dozen eggs, so I scrambled them all in a bowl and poured into small baggies and froze them stacked flat. They cook up quite well. Quoting: Windsage I have since discovered that due to the hardships caused by months of lock downs, most of the other local food banks are also giving out food by the box-full without even caring to investigate ones income level or even ask for ID. When I receive items that I wouldn't generally eat like canned peas or canned fruit salad, I will add them to my food preps, or if it is perishable I'll just give to a friend. So please know that this is widely available and could help you stretch your food budget to be able to buy more of the meat you want. Yeah if someone is having to nickel and dime things and cut back on meat then they need to find food banks. There is no shame in that. Lots of people are hurting. Especially if you have kids. Get whatever you can and like you said if you can’t use something give it to someone else. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77646097 United States 10/17/2020 03:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You may want to cut back on other things before cutting back on meat. Especially for growing kids. Vegans and vegetarians have to take a lot of supplements to keep them going. Even then they can get sick from no animal protein. And too many carbs for adults or inactive children is not a good thing. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76984449 Put meat first in your budget. Everything else gets cut back. Get rid of tv. Anything extra. Without your health nothing matters. Absolutely untrue and very ignorant. I haven't eaten any meat since 1992 and no animal products whatsoever since 1997. I'm in the top 98 percentile of health. If you eat whole foods, a plant based diet is the healthiest way to eat. Animal agriculture is devastating to the environment, as well as horrific for the animals. When I did my masters years ago studying this topic, the profs said it's a matter of when, not if, a meat tax is coming. It's good to transition away from eating animals now. Check out nutritionfacts.org for the peer reviewed, medical research. There are also tons of recipes there. You may be able to do that but most people can’t and shouldn’t. Especially children. |

The categories are meat poultry pasta and rice and soup. There might be some desserts too and if you own an instant pot this site will be perfect for you. The best beef stew I ever tasted is on that site. These recipes will fit your budget and I hope you like them. He also has Russian stuffed cabbages which are very economical to make. The channel also shows how to pressure cook a turkey and then you have meat for turkey tetrazzini and soups and turkey salad. Enjoy 😊 |

Add water, cover and cook until the beans are tender, approximately 35 to 40 minutes. Check the beans after 20 minutes to make sure they have enough water. When the beans are ready, taste and adjust salt and liquid if needed. Add the kale and cook for 5 minutes more. Serve with bread. The truth is incontrovertible. Fried rice requires several cups of frozen/cold cooked rice, a bit of sesame oil for flavoring, some chopped onion and a couple of scrambled eggs. Add some bits of beef or pork, maybe a few finely chopped shrimp and some soy sauce and you are set. Scallions give some color. Put just about anything in. Lots of recipes on the net. Can take cheap steak and dice it up finely cook with some cumin and chile powder and make Tacos Al Carbon. Grille the steak bits in a cast iron fry pan. serve with some refried beans and spanish rice and tortillas with lettuce, chopped tomato, onion. Red beans and rice, cook New Orleans Red Beans from dry down to almost a mush and add a link of Kielbasa or favorite sausage. Using Brown Rice, organic short-grain, makes most beans into 100% protein. Serve brown rice instead of white and family gets all the nutrients lost when rice is "polished". Eggs are cheap. Omelettes with diced sandwich ham, onion and slice of cheese are good protein. Buy bulk rolled oats and add nuts and raisins for breakfast nutrition. Can use Carnation evaporated milk, mixed w/.75 gal of water and get a gal of milk... Powdered milk is good w/sugar. Yellow Grits, polenta, is tasty and good w/eggs & sausage or bacon. Cheap and hearty. Good for dinner too! Peanut butter & honey on toast or with jelly, even maple syrup is a good protein rich breakfast. Buy large value packs of fresh ground 80% beef and make your hamburger from scratch. Buy bread at local bread co discount store. I got 5pks of hamburger and hotdog buns for $5 yesterday. 2doz english muffins and loaf of organic wheat bread was another $5... Lots of ways to save money on food. Stock up on sale items and build a pantry. Can buy bags of oats, corn, rice, and other grains at Feed Store. Just don't get "treated" stuff which is for farm planting. |

The simplest yet tasty and kid friendly goulash is 1 lb. of hamburger, brown that, boil up some macaroni, add that, and one can of Campbell's Tomato soup (just straight out of the can). It is literally the most perfect food, you can eat it for Breakfast lunch or dinner. You can make the pie crust from scratch. four eggs, 1.5 cups of milk, whatever cheese you have laying around, any veg you have laying around, and any meat (literally, ham, turkey, left over sausage, taco meat, anything). Reheats beautifully. I also learned during quarantine you can sub out really any dairy for the milk: cream, whipping cream, half and half, sour cream, cream cheese, even mayonnaise (still don't quite get this one, but look it up). Anyway, I say quiche. Quoting: Justice4all We make crustless Spinach quiche. Be sure to spray the cooking pie dish with oil. Preheated oven 400° for 40 minutes 8-10 eggs 2 c grated cheese 1 pkg frozen spinach drained 1/4 t cayenne pepper The truth is incontrovertible. I'm cooking 3.5lbs of beef right now. Chicken and rice is also good, meatballs. Enless soups you can make with beans/spices/lentils. I never was a cook in life and this got me into it. I now cook every single day and quit going out to eat. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79431271 I think it might be cheap. Its real. Its a basic dish so its obvious as to it being real. [link to www.ginodacampo.com (secure)] Just follow recipe. I use beef dripping as its cheaper than olive oil but you still use olive oil and butter for pasta. Nearly 2 cloves of garlic. 2 tablepspoons + of rosemary when you sweat veg and garlic. I use 100 ml red wine. Dont even measeure milk just add to wine like described. Properly fry beef and pork ( seperate ) Broil if it is lean and or add more beef dripping. Add a bay leaf. Simmer for 3 hours with a lid on. All ingredients can be frozen. Mainly celery. Red wine. Rosemary. Can also be reheated from semi frozen. Just reheat on a hob stove. Use dried pasta also. As described. Juliene carrot so its finely diced. Celery and onion finely chopped. Celery chopped from juliene. Im not a desert person but in uk. You can get 200g chocolate bars that for £1 i prefer to cadburys ( cadburys too sweet ) You just have a row of chocolate after meal. |
