Re: Cooking meals with LITTLE TO NO MEAT for a family, need your ideas!
Ok so our grocery budget has been cut in half, and prices keep going up.

I need ideas and recipes for making meat stretch for a family.

We already do soups, stews and chili. Great budget meals!

I've recently added fried rice to the meal rotation, fantastic way to make a lot of food with very little. Plus my kids love it.

You can also stretch a 1lb package of Italian sausage into several meals: take half and mix into pasta sauce for spaghetti, freeze the other half to use for homemade pizza.

Any other ideas from you good folks would be sincerely appreciated!

Moo shu pork (from a chinese restaurant) has very little meat and it's delicious! Should be easy enough to make at home.

===================

Beans mixed with any grain give you the nutritional equivalent of meat...that's why mexicans have alot of beans & rice in their meals.

Bulk up you meat with eggs and oats if you ground the beef or meat. This is a great way to increase the volume.

If you just use oats, grind the Oats to a flour, to or you can soak the whole oats for a day so it breaks down into the meat for a nice blend.

Hope all is well and works out :)

Had some cheap white rice, about 30 cents worth, can of fire roasted tomato chunks (49 cents), and can of pinto beans (59 cents)
Adding some homemade biscuits or flat bread (50 cents) and for around 2 dollars with some spices thrown in you can feed a family of four!

We made this, had some leftover the next day and threw it in a salad. Yum, the mixture tasted like their was meat in it, delicious, nutritious, and inexpensive, a win, win for sure.

Back in the 70's when meat was so expensive, my mom would split hot dogs in half and BBQ them in the oven. It got us by when times were tight. We also ate fried spam and rice, not the healthiest meals but it was filling.

The so-called elite will always eat meat. They will take it away from the masses because without meat we do get weaker. Especially children. Look up Weston Price. If vegan and vegetarian was so good they would be eating that way but they don’t. They know better.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76984449

Humans are engineered to eat meat, as evidenced by their teeth. Vegetarian diets work OK for monks and nuns of various religions, but certainly not for growing kids or people working manual labor. The supplements vegans need to stay healthy are another indication that humans need meat for health. Meat was one of the first foods people had to eat, and has been with us for a long long time.

People who do not want to eat meat for various reasons should not be coerced or forced to eat it, and those who don't want to eat it should abstain.

Meat addict, I could outwork the lot of you & I am strictly vegetarian.

Coconut oil my friend. It's really good for you and it's very filling. Eggs with coconut oil and butter. Saute some spinach (nutritionally dense) add some bacon, you don't need a lot. Super healthy, paleo, low carb! Beat disease and stay full!

Frogs, crayfish, carp, wild turkey, deer, porcupine, all are pretty easy to harvest. You can get collect all the acorns too.

Why is people think American in history shopped at grocery stores? For most of her existence, grocery stores didn't exist or were for rich people.

If you can't afford a meat hammer, an ordinary one will do. Brine your wild game to purge any gamey taste. You do that with crawdads too. Most people do not collectcrawdads, butthey should. They would be very happy toeatthem. There are very simple crawdad traps made with some screen material and a little ingenuity and using old offal as bait.

Old military recipe books routinely hadwild game recipes like cooking a porcupine. I PROMISEyou that if you prepare it once, your family won'tknow the difference and be happy to eatit, and they are not hard to whomp upside their head or body. What could be easier?

Lay some snares on a squirrel run by propping up a branch aftrer descenting your hands with soil and peppermint or sumac berry tea. They will fall for it routinely, but you need that meat hammer or else you got to slow cook them...so they are tender. All that activity makes their meat chewy.

Grilled cheese sandwiches melt butter in the skillet before you put the bread in the skillet.

Catch some fish fillet them and fry them.
You can catch a lot of bream on little bait pretty quickly.

Fried Potatoes are good and cheap.

If you have a woodstove anyway, look up the PROPER way to freeze maple sap and then boil what remains. Everyone should tap maples and birches this year. Butnot everyone likes wintergreen and birch has that hint of flavor. You could use the latter as a sweetener instead of on pancakes.

I made whole topics on this subject on eating frugally for a variety of reasons.

You could raise rabbits anywhere. Heck you coud raise and eat guinea pigs as they do in Peru. Rabbit manure is perfect for the garden.

Freezing maple sap before "firing" it vastly concentrates the sugar content called the "Walden effect". It's old school ancestral knowledge. Hardly anyone knows that anymore as people got uppity and bought their maple syrup which is nuts as it's free.
