When I was a kid we had a 386sx with a 2400 baud modem.
It also had an 80 megabyte hard drive. Early 90s.

With the modem I could connect with the phone line to other computers that ran a BBS and download stuff like small shareware games or .wav sound files, and late in its lifespan, mp3s came out.

Some of them would have stuff like pictures from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.

You had to choose between downloading larger .gif files or smaller .jpg files. It could take 20 minutes to download a single picture so a smaller file for the same quality was better, right?

But there was a catch. Same as now, all .jpg files are compressed. But back then with that computer, it took a minute or two to display on the screen because the CPU had to deal with the compression to display them.

Whereas a .gif file would display...almost instantly. You could watch the picture appear from the top down and it'd take like a second or two.
