what does he know that he wants to leave Earth where oxygen is produced naturally, where there is fertile soil and LOTS of water, plants grow, animals roam? and go to save us to some frozen desert far away in space, where oxygen needs to be produced artificially, water probably too, where it will all depend on technology and without it - you're dead. what must he know is about to happen to Earth that makes him want to escape to Mars??

1. Self sustaining means 3 things:

Food/air/water/habitation, Materials for self-replication which would be heavy as hell, and the Ability to Construct Everything there. I don't know much about Mars but the materials they could get there would be damned near impossible to attain all on Mars. Their minerals there they have here sure, but then there are minerals here they do not have there.

I wonder if he really thought this through or just threw the dart at the wall to see if it would stick. It might take 10 generations to make sustainable colony there. And they would literally need to consider planting genetic plants that could survive and foster underground in Mars harsh environments to spark an atmosphere to make the planet habitable. A colony without habitation wouldn't ever be sustainable.

The elite trying to escape to Mars is just fine with me. When they hit the doom above Earth their look of surprise will be memes to be remembered forever.
