The drop is seen in all groups, including older patients and those with underlying conditions, suggesting that physicians are getting better at helping patients survive their illness. This could also mean that the virus has mutated and become less lethal. Despite the fact that new cases seem to be growing exponentially, deaths are not going up at a matching rate, which seems to further support the idea of mutation. If we are very lucky, this trend will remain stable or decline, with the idea that possibly a third and smaller wave will hit, as happened in the 1918 flu pandemic, and then the virus will disappear or be present on an endemic basis at a low level. |
