Quoting: Anonymous Without the Mask 79402409 Dang, dawg. That's harsh. According to the article: "The point is made early on that there is not a serial killer who has been hunting down Deadheads for decades. As prolific cybersleuth Todd Matthews explains in an interview, what he established by linking these cases to the victims’ Grateful Dead fandom is a commonality that garners attention—murder and the Grateful Dead is pretty tantalizing as far as headlines go—and hopefully helps solve cold cases." ~Wharf Rat |

Amazing reporting. Death don't have no Mercy is about the inevitability of death, and Dire Wolf was based on the story The Hound Of the Baskervilles. I'm surprised the authors didn't cite "Dark Star" as a song about 'darkness' too! ~Wharf Rat |

(OP) User ID: 79386534 United States 10/22/2020 09:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I know, right? How about the fact that there's like a billion Dead Heads (okay, probably more like a hundred million) and the sheer numbers of fans alone mean some of them were, statistically speaking, bound to be murdered. (Sorry to say.) Simple math. It would be weird if there weren't any victims from a group so large. ~Wharf Rat |

How about this for a corollary: Like moths to a flame, people will ill intent would have seen Grateful Dead shows as a place to blend in, cause chaos, or do nefarious things under the cover of so many peaceful hippy-types. I think it has less to do with the music itself than the culture around it. Especially after "Touch of Grey" in '85 when the band got massive exposure and suddenly became 'hip' again... ~Wharf Rat |

If you're a predator, cults of any sort make for great hunting grounds. How many dumb misfits join up with some sort of Satanic group and end up dead? There are plenty of cases in police files. Living the gypsy life, tripping out on acid, sleeping with strangers, believing everything is cool...that's the perfect recipe for predators to prey upon them. Sometimes they are fortunate and they are just sexual predators and they may not even realize they were used or care. Others are looking for a darker, deeper thrill and have found easy prey. It's a scary world. There are common sense reasons for all the warnings against promiscuity and drug use. It's not always about controlling parental figures or repressive sexuality. |
