As much as I love those acoustic shows at the Warfield in 1980, have you ever heard Jerry Garcia solo, from 1982? He did a solo tour that year, but apparently the experience of playing by himself was unnerving and he only did that for one night. Then he brought John Kahn on stage with him and they played the rest of that short tour as a bass/acoustic duo. Maybe you've heard the gig they played at the Oregon State Prison together? Now that's a real gem, I highly recommend it! Anyway, as for Little Sadie, Jerry sang two (slightly) different versions over the years: one went, "a .44 smokeless under my head", and the other said it was a .22. I wish I could remember the full couplet, but maybe it'll come to me. ALSO, you are absolutely right about the traveler and the folklore behind the name Grateful Dead. It was from Egyptian mythology, if I'm not mistaken. But you got it right, buddy. That's how they got their name. Enjoy the day in NorCal my friend! Glad you got to see the Dead back when Jerry was still alive, that's pretty sweet. ~Wharf Rat |

"(America’s systemic racism exists even inside Rainbow Village." Stopped reading there, but I chalk the deaths up to the life style. plain and simple. Dirty people squatting any place they could in those days, typically tripping balls from some good blotter and the rest is history. That's a pretty apt saying, thanks for sharing It actually reminds me of a George Carlin bit, something like: "The wisest person I ever met once told me the wisest thing I ever heard. And I never forgot it. But although I never forgot it, I can't quite remember it either. So what I'm left with is the memory of having learned something very wise, which I can't quite put my finger on." Cheers! ~Wharf Rat |

How about this for a corollary: Like moths to a flame, people will ill intent would have seen Grateful Dead shows as a place to blend in, cause chaos, or do nefarious things under the cover of so many peaceful hippy-types. I think it has less to do with the music itself than the culture around it. Especially after "Touch of Grey" in '85 when the band got massive exposure and suddenly became 'hip' again... Tie Died in the video..... not Tie Dyed.... you are right OP I forgot to say Hello to you, Beeches. Nice to see you, as always! ~Wharf Rat |

Because it's the only way to climb and become a better person. Unfortunately for addicts hitting bottom means death in many cases, not from withdrawals, but from bad decisions. I went to Al-Anon for a while, which is sort of like AA but for people who have friends and family who are alcoholics. I'm not exactly sure if they share the same Big Book, but the 12 steps (seem to be) the same, anyway. And yeah, that's a good saying. And it hurts because it's true :/ People can criticize AA if they want to, but I will give them credit: they sure have a lot of common sense, real-life tips for dealing with hard times. Their "sayings" often contain some quite valuable nuggets of wisdom. --Wharf R. ~Wharf Rat |

I gotta say, the Grateful Dead ruined me for all other jam bands that came afterwards. I know I should "open my mind", and that there's a lot of good music out there, but... I just can't! I'm slowly working my way through the free GD archives, trying to listen to all ~3700 shows that were recorded between 1966-1995. If I can do that, before I'll die, I will be a happy puppy. ~Wharf Rat |
