i didn't know they gassed people at the warkock shows. was it the gate crashers like at deer creek?
 Quoting: guitar ace

It was a crowd of folks up on the mezzanine entrance, I think most didn't have tickets.

The cops were pissed because the band had tricked the town by using a different name.

Damn near caused a stampede.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79466472

Riiiight, that's what I remember reading. They had called themselves The Warlocks back in '65, before they changed it to the Grateful Dead.

I think they were trying to test out some new material/warm up for another pending tour, and the only venue they could book was a smaller one, and as long as they didn't use the GD name....

But, of course, some sleuths figured it out pretty quick and things got out of control...

Would you say, looking back, the use of tear gas was appropriate? You mentioned a near-stampede...

According to the band, they got "too famous" after Touch of Grey became a hit single. After that, they basically HAD to play stadium venues and large amphitheaters, and never again could get away with playing smaller theatres and places where the ambiance/acoustic were actually good.

It's sad, because basically everybody except for Jerry was so happy to have the money rolling in. But Garcia already had more money than he knew what to do with (songwriting royalties, etc.) and was more inclined to do JGB stuff rather than the hassle of playing Giants Stadium and shit like that, where the music wasn't able to be heard as well...

Thanks for more of the backstory about those Warlocks shows, though, AC. I love hearing the details, and you've done a lot for this thread. I want to make sure and say Thank You for posting

hf
 Quoting: Wharf Rat

I had never heard about the testing new material at smaller shows, makes sense though as Hampton Roads Colosseum is less than 14,000 capacity. I had heard that the town council had forbidden the "Grateful Dead" to play in their town, so the band accommodated them!

That's correct about the veil, it has to do with all the mind opening psychedelics we used to do.

Hence the bumper sticker I used to have on my bus: "I love my country but fear my gov ment".

250 plus shows here buddy, inluding Jerry's band, yeah, I've been around the block a couple of times.
 Quoting: Patagonians

250 shows plus JGB? Dude that's awesome!!!

What were the Garcia Band shows like, if you don't mind me asking? Were they as laid back as I've read?

They always said that Jerry loved his JGB, he could do covers that he loved, and take extra long solos. Plus, the backup singers, the black ladies were awesome and so was the Rev. Melvin Seals on organ!

Do you have any highlights from those solo-Jerry shows?

Just curious!

hf
 Quoting: Wharf Rat

I must say and admit that once I went to my first Jerry show at the Orpheum in SF (87 I think) I was hooked and preferred them over the dead.

Small venues, awesome bar on the floor (Warfield), definitely more mellow than the GD crowd and shows.

Best times of my life.
 Quoting: Patagonians

Aww, hell yeah! That sounds awesome, especially the bar. I didn't realize that Warfield had a bar! Explains a lot why those acoustic shows were so well received, lol!

Thanks for sharing the memories, I really mean that

Specially the "Not Just For Kids Only" shows.

Wait.... wait... wait. You actually SAW Garcia/Grisman? From the Not for Kids Only period??? Holy shit! That was actually a really good album. That's where I learned the song Jenny Jenkins :)))

Those two guys had WONDERFUL interplay, between the David's mando and Jerry's acoustic/tenor banjo. Wow, what I would give to have seen one of those shows...

(Did they play "So What?" the extended Miles Davis piece? I always loved listening to them play, no matter what the tune was, actually...)

FWIW, the few times the Dead played Passaic NJ was because it was David Grisman's hometown and he'd bring his mother and grandmother to see the Dead there. (They were friends from the Old & In the Way days, if you recall...)

So freakin cool!

You make a fair point. How about this for a corollary:

Like moths to a flame, people will ill intent would have seen Grateful Dead shows as a place to blend in, cause chaos, or do nefarious things under the cover of so many peaceful hippy-types.

I think it has less to do with the music itself than the culture around it.

Especially after "Touch of Grey" in '85 when the band got massive exposure and suddenly became 'hip' again...

how is it a hundred million fans when it was the same people following them around from show to show? I think your number is a little high. (No pun intended.)

I think they played 3 or 4 shows at the Warfield.

I guess I'm including everybody who ever got laid listening to Truckin', or boggied on the dance floor to Casey Jones.

And the fans around the world...

Maybe I'm over-estimating, but they did have a dedicated core of fans o the East coast, Southeast, Deep south, Mid-America, north plains states, and West coast. Maybe it's 50 million.

You make a good point, but I still think there might be more actual Dead Heads -- who know all the lyrics, can quote you dates of shows from 40 years ago -- than legit Rolling Stones fans, for example.

The Grateful Dead was one of the most important bands in American history, and I don't think I'm going out on a limb in saying so

Yeah that drums --> other one is sick. I wish the drums lasted longer!!! You're good man, you're really good :))

Vince Welnick.. I read all the articles about him committing suicide. Sad, that's all I can say. He really loved being in the Dead, and it was hard for him when, apparently, none of the guys ever kept in touch with him.

I actually even like the 1991-1993 period when he played that strange synth-keyboard. With him and Bruce Hornsby in the band I will say it didn't suck and was actually pretty cool. There's a Shoreline show from 1991 when they did a Scarlet Begonias > Victim or the Crime > Fire on the Mountain which still manages to 'steal my face', all these years later.

You're a lucky guy, ace. I think you really should write a memoir someday, of your life or at least those days when you were a gigging musician.

I'd read it!

Re: Article: Why are so many Grateful Dead fans being murdered?
Interesting story...

If the premise is true, I'd say there are a multiple of factors, not limited to the obvious:

1) We are generally naive, and trusting of strangers
2) Generally non-violent
3) Lots of drugs, leading to bad judgement and character discernment

I hope that doesn't sound harsh, and my list certainly doesn't apply to every Dead Head, but... a lot of them.

But since this is GLP, I'm assuming some of you will say this is due to a purported Satantic/CIA/Mk Ultra connection.

Yes, Bobby and Micky have attended BoGrove, reportedly.

Anyway, food for thought. Interesting artcile. Have at it, GLP

well, I would sort of agree. I don't dislike the Dead but I wouldn't call myself a fan. I hung with what I call the "Neo Hippy" crowd in college and they were all avowed "Dead Heads"... even though that was just after Jerry passed and the bus had kind of moved on. The music reminds me of those days.

anyway, the fact that it was a lot of the same people going to the shows might play in to it. If you were harboring ill intent... it seems like a Dead show would offer a target-rich environment. Young, naive, intoxicated people like my friends in school. Not saying all Dead fans were like that, but they attracted those sorts of folks throughout their career.

Lots of deadheads made, ate, took acid and still do. Acid opens up the third eye and makes you see the Reptilians just like in the movie THEY LIVE, it's a no brainier why they would be getting killed

Re: Article: Why are so many Grateful Dead fans being murdered?
Only the smart Grateful Dead fans are being murdered...by the CIA, because through their worship of shite music they decided to find out as much as possible about Jerry Garcia and like anyone else with an I.Q above Forrest Gump level, they realized what is blaring obvious....Jerry Garcia was always a CIA asset/agent, and "The Company" doesn't want the truth circulating among everyone because they still get a lot of the profits from Grateful Dead merch, and all that sutff.
