Great question. Some will cut the stove pipe shorter and just let the minor amount of smoke they have from a very dry-wood (and small) fire inundate the second floor and seep out wherever it can, i.e. they'll be looking at the chimney tops, not for small escaping wisps around slightly cracked windows, etc.

The key will be to be located somewhere with lots of like minded individuals, and to use small amounts of dry wood. People will always trade if you have food, ammo, etc.

You can even build a makeshift blanket/sheet/tarp tent around a small wood stove to keep the needed fire warming area (and fire size) to a minimum, or close off a large portion of even the room where the wood stove is, with the same materials. Just be sure nothing can fall onto the stove after you put it up...i.e do it securely. You'll be surprised how small an area you really "need" to stay warm in. You can always venture elsewhere in the house for stretching your legs, going to the bathroom, etc.
