Turtle Hermit User ID: 78227579 United States 10/23/2020 10:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | EVs sound good at face value, but the reality is this: 1) Right now...people get cash backs, and incentives, etc to have an EV. When everyone has one...that won’t exist. They are expensive..like I could buy a Ford Raptor, instead of a plastic PoS car type of expensive. 2) Batteries use rare earth materials and other exotic materials to give “extended range” and longevity. 3) Once everyone has one...where do you think the power to charge them is coming from? It’s still fossil fuel based, or nuclear (we’d have to build a lot more). Right now people get a break in rates if they charge at “off hours”...what hours will be off when the entire planet is trying to charge their car? 4) Electricity bill. LoL. Think it’s bad now running the AC during summer? Wait till every family with 2-4 cars are charging constantlydurimg the summer! There are other considerations as well...longevity of battery life, disposal of said battery, how dangerous they are in a crash situation...yea! Battery acid all over me! Yea...just gonna take a pass for now. I’d rather have a car with a radioactive plutonium bullet that lasts me my entire lifetime(shielded of course) , becuase that sounds like something plausible, instead of this BS. How about all road are tracks like the oldschool 70s RC racing tracks? You can’t go off-road, and your car is run with electromagnetic engines, that if anything like the RC tracks of old....would accelerate you fast than is humanly safe. Always remember these words: Work hard, study well, and eat and sleep plenty! That is the Turtle Hermit way! We must master the art of peace in addition to the art of war! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 27781042 United States 10/23/2020 10:47 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We got telecommuting instead. Telecommuting is better for the environment because it cuts down on total driving. All-battery grid powered electric vehicles will probably never become the dominant mode of transport now. Telecommuting means the oil price is going to be very weak for a decade or two. This eliminates a lot of the cost incentive. After a decade or two when the price of oil begins to recover to pre-Covid/telecommuting levels, what we'll probably get are vehicles which generate pretty clean electric power with gas powered turbines and which use electric motors. I think what will happen is that somewhere between a few months and a year, as it becomes clear that telecommuting is here to stay whatever happens with the pandemic and the rest of the economy, gas will fall to about $1 per gallon and taxes will then be imposed to increase the price to about $2 or $2.50 on the East coast, probably more out west. Grid powered cars are dirtier than gas powered cars. They pollute the air more than gas powered cars because electricity is mostly coal and is mostly going to continue to be coal for the next few decades. The power grid was never going to be ready for everyone using grid powered electric vehicles any time soon, especially not out in California. The wild card is that there could be an increase in economic development and many more people driving. Oil companies will certainly have to consider doing what they can to help more people get behind the wheel asap to avoid a decade or two of low prices from the telecommuting oil price shock. Alternatively, coal fired electricity plants could perhaps be replaced with relatively clean burning oil plants if the oil price seems likely to remain low. Basically, an EV company like Tesla is now on borrowed time while the market is in denial about these basic issues. They will surely need a genius strategy for the years ahead to avoid total failure. |

Quoting: AR 15-SPECIALIST You're kidding, right? Electric motors have unbeatable torque. I thought everybody knew that by now? Even though the future of "electric vehicles" is now iffy because of telecommuting killing the price of oil for maybe a decade or so, electric motors are still going to replace the conventional combustion engine setup. Too much work has gone into them and they are so much better. Instead though there will be various methods of generating electric power on the vehicle itself instead of from the grid, probably mostly using gas power in one way or another. The simplest way is just a small combustion engine itself (probably small motorcycle sized) except only used to generate electricity. Then you only need a fraction of the electricity storage in batteries that current all battery wall electricity powered vehicles use. As a result of the higher efficiency of electric motors, these hybrids will have superior range even to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. The same tank of gas will generate electric power and take you probably more than twice as far. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 27781042 United States 10/23/2020 10:58 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sure there is. Not that most batteries need to be made of lithium anyway. But a gas-electric hybrid will generate electric power from gas in one way or another and use it to power an efficient electric motor. It will only need an hour or two of battery storage. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27781042 That's barely true even NOW, let alone decades out. At most latitudes, solar beats coal right now, with the price/value proposition getting much better literally every year. Which is why for example some coal plants under construction in India actually got cancelled -- mid-project -- because solar was so much better deal that no point finishing the coal plant. A hugely disproportionate share of all NEW power installations are renewables, and for good reason. It will still take some decades for full conversion, because installed base of fossil crap is so huge, but it will happen. |

Much much worse than gas or diesel powered cars. Only a moron would want them in mass production. Kamala Harris is not a Natural Born Citizen. She's illegally running. Used by the Founders... Book I of The Law of Nations, Chapter XIX, § 212 (Joseph Chitty numbering) – “Citizens and natives” reads: 'The citizens are the members of the civil society; bound to this society by certain duties, and subject to its authority, they equally participate in its advantages. The natives, or natural-born citizens, are those born in the country, of parents who are citizens. As the society cannot exist and perpetuate itself otherwise than by the children of the citizens, those children naturally follow the condition of their fathers, and succeed to all their rights.' 1758 Emerich de Vattel Oh' What the Hell, do I look like I want to die in some nursing home one day... America must have 4 new Constitutional Amendments... 1. Drug Tests and Mental Evaluations on all politicians and judges randomly five times per year. 2. Term Limits for Federal politicians and judges. 3. Mental and health standards for Supreme Court Justices and retirement age set. 4. A 'Star Chamber' of elected Natural Born Citizens (no attorney's) to ivestigate, try, and prosecute the politicians and government employee's as they see fit. One of the key points is that TaaS (Transportation as a SERVICE), along with autonomy (self-driving), will soon dominate, and the result will be a collapse of the vehicle fleet, since transport will become many-fold more efficient -- many fewer vehicles required for same transport services. With a ~90% collapse in size of fleet, power requirements will be commensurately small. That's not to mention that EVs are vastly more efficient, just comparing them one-for-one (mile-for-mile) with ICE. IOW, total energy requirements for all transport services are about to take an enormous dive. Oil companies are doomed. All this btw also answers your "off hours" question. Moot point. |
