Seasonal flu mutates quickly, a large gene mutation about once every 12 months that gives us the need for seasonal flu shots.

Once it goes through a population and begins to mutate is when a new population, not exposed to the mutation, begins to have it circulate.

Typically this happens in north/south hemisphere cycles because of global travel and seasonal reverses.

THIS YEAR GLOBAL TRAVEL NEARLY HALTED.

The flu has had very little chance to mutate the way it typically does, and almost no chance of exposure to the next population set.

Therefore, the chance of it mutating and creating a large outbreak has declined significantly. the flu that was hear last year is what we are dealing with most, and it already infected the majority of those that it would have during that season.

The chance of any major southern mutation making it back north is also extremely low with limited travel.

It hasn't gone away, it just hasn't moved like normal. Will be about two years after standard global travel resumes before it comes back to normal seasonal levels. Don't forget, a strain of the seasonal flu we vaccinate against each year is a direct relative of the 1918 pandemic flu that NEVER WENT AWAY. This is the nature of a virus.
