Re: Better get stocked up now for the Holidays
We stocked pantry and the deep freeze a couple weeks ago but could still use a few holiday specific things.

Something tells me that a rude awakening is coming for a lot of the sheeple.

Get what you can while you can...and don't forget salt, pepper, spices, cooking oil....as well as the other basic dry staples

In addition to solar panels and 850 amp-hour battery array, I've got two Honda dual-fuel generators, 100 gallons of gasoline and four 20# propane tanks and a camping cookstove.

I don't believe we'll be losing anything here, power or no power.

Read for comprehension "850 amp-hour battery array" + "two Honda dual-fuel generators, 100 gallons of gasoline and four 20# propane tanks"

Solar charges the battery bank during the day and can be topped up as needed by the generators. If you're talking black skies for a week, then what are you going to do for food because all the crops have died. Moran. Get a brian.

You assume you are going to be able to find gasoline though or that you will have an unlimited supply.

And you are terribly limited in your scope of thinking with your dependency on " modern " technologies. It wouldn't be the first time , by any means , humanity has been through the same circumstances.

1816 has long been known as the year without summer. Vermonters still call it “1800 and Froze to Death,” a year of frosts every month, dark skies, and mysterious lights that caused a widespread belief that a higher power was displeased.

For certain areas if the power goes off the deep freezer is outside so just put your food outside?

Kroger strike is true - at least in Houston - where the epicenter is.

Yep. I actually bought a bunch of chex mix last night as I normally make that during the holidays. I did it with this same premise in mind. Shit, this sucks.

Re: Better get stocked up now for the Holidays
If you are able, you should buy your food for the holidays now. Might be a good idea to prepare for more than that actually

Kroger is going on strike starting tomorrow (or so I heard) so shelf stocking might be a problem and the teamsters won't cross a picket line so who knows if the stores will be resupplied and shelves restocked.

add to that...

The teamsters union is calling for a nationwide shutdown from November 26th thru the 29th. 4 days.

Most major stores have 3 days worth of supplies in their stockroom and that is it.

Might not be a problem at all...might be a real problem for some.

If you can, plan accordingly

I ain't trying to be Cheyenne Mountain and live like a king in some underground palace while "earth upheaval" of some kind takes place topside for a year or more.

I can get through a month of near total isolation from any outside support. If more than that it required, I'll have started out better than most in facing whatever comes next.

I have the food, fuel and other resources to bridge that time. That is better than 99% of Americans and I have confidence it will see me through any kind of disturbance within living memory on this continent. On top of that I'm resourceful, an engineer by trade, and can usually manage to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I can manage a tactical relocation with very little notice. Can you?

I'm not "limited in the scope of my thinking" - I'm realistic in my estimation of my PRACTICAL ability to prepare for any likely (and most unlikely) things that could happen in my area. No, I'm not prepared for an asteroid to land on my house. No, I'm not prepared to take on Godzilla. Just about anything else within the realm of realistic possibility, we're pretty set for. If we have to resort to stone knives and bearskins to make it through Thanksgiving and Christmas then I'll owe you an egg nope. From where I sit it seems like a safe bet.

Snow? If you want to have a big natural fridge/pantry that will last long into the summer, you need to make a dug-out and get big blocks of ice from a nearby river, or lake and just put them inside the dug-out. That's what people used to do here in the pre-fridge era. Anyway, such a dug-out can be quite cool even without the ice.
