In Elbert County, Georgia there’s a set of stones called the Georgia Guidestones. They were put there in 1979, with a set of ten guidelines, in eight modern languages and four dead ones, carved onto the slabs.

Neimark visited the stones and writes about the mystery behind them. The only man who knows who built them isn’t telling, “They could put a gun to my head and kill me, I will never reveal his real name,” he told her. And the purpose of the inscriptions isn’t even clear. The active regions in Lasky's video are mostly new. They either appeared for the first time or ballooned in size from an existing spot over the weekend. One of them, sunspot AR3055, is truly awesome, stretching more than 100,000 km from end to end with more than a dozen dark cores. It is almost directly facing Earth, and poses a threat for strong flares.

To make the video, Lasky capped his telescope with a solar filter tuned to the glow of ionized calcium (CaK). CaK filters are excellent detectors of "sunspot froth"--the bubbly, turbulent sea of magnetism that surrounds active sunspot groups. Every sunspot in the video is surrounded.

Firefighters Gaining Ground On Wildfire At Yosemite National Park

Hundreds of firefighters are racing against time to contain a wildfire threatening a small community and ancient Sequoia trees at Yosemite National Park. The Washburn Fire has scorched more than 2,000 acres and is 25 percent contained.

The fire was first reported on July 7 and residents of the Wawona community and campers have since been evacuated. Fire crews are using several tactics to protect more than 500 Sequoias in the park’s Mariposa Grove, including the most well-known tree named “The Grizzly Giant.”

Firefighters are doing everything they can to help protect the famous sequoias in the Yosemite National Park from the #Washburnfire.

The flames are being fueled by extreme heat and dry conditions. Crews are tracking the fire from above and using air tanker planes to drop fire-retardant chemicals on the blaze. They are also using bulldozers to create containment lines and wrapping some of the Sequoias with protective foil.

The southern portion of Yosemite is closed to visitors, but the rest of the national park remains open.
