A few more things...

* The "GLP effect" is this uncanny phenomenon where the more we discuss topic, usually something speculative that hasn't happened yet, the more likely it is not to happen. It's kind of a joke, but it seems real sometimes.



* Karma system: The green thumbs up button under a users name gives them 1 green karma point. You're supposed to write a reason why you're giving them karma, although I suppose you can leave it blank. It's a nice thing to say who you are, leave your name.

You can also give red (negative) karma but try to be nice about it. Very few people leave their names on red karma "gifts" (Lance Roseman of BC is one of the honorable few who will, for example), but the Mods can see who left what. Do not abuse the red karma system; like giving red karma to the same user over and over for no real reason ("drive-by" reds) or being especially disgusting -- again, the Mods won't take kindly to this. Just a word of advice!

* Call-outs: Don't make threads specifically about another user, unless it's their birthday or something extraordinarily positive. If you make a thread about So-and-so and call them a jackass, it will be deleted.

* You SHOULD report vile, violent, or other replies/threads which violate our Terms of Service. Just click "Report" on the left side, next to the post. You'll have to write a short reason why the mods should consider removing the post. Some people report stuff all the time, and move up the "karma ranks" from this tactic alone. It's kinda lame. Most of us will report things which are blatantly awful, we don't spend 24/7 looking for posts to report. But technically there's nothing wrong with that. Kind of a sensitive subject here, with some people.

* Last thing: Smileys. Here's the best source for you to check out, it's just putting certain words between two colons (:) Here's the single best resource for memes/smilies

Hah, no I'm no scholar, I didn't even graduate high school, but you're certainly welcome. It's not easy for some people to ask about stuff; GLP has a lot of nuances, I applaud you for asking questions.

BTW the guy in my avatar is Diogenes. He's kind of my personal hero. He lived in a rain barrel and had no possessions; he was mostly interested in finding the truth about the meaning of life. And even though he was basically a hobo, I find that very inspiring.
