What’s the cure for farmers lung? | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 69636023 United States 11/26/2020 07:39 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Anyone can learn how to do it. There are good demonstration videos by RNs and Respiratory Therapists in training on youtube. This repetitive cupping dislodged themucus plugs that form to capture that foreign material, but often it gets trapped. A bronchodialator will often increase your air volume to get your pulse ox readings where they need to be. Something as simple as Breathe Easy Tea will sure help. And scratchiness in your throat can be handled by Throat Coat Tea. Both are commonly available and inexpensive. |

It's plain old common sense. If that debris stays, then successive waves of various white blood cells will aggregate to attack it. Then they die, and so cannot escape, causing pus. The patient gets thickening yellow phlegm that darkens in color, then turns greenish and smells bad. That is a warning sign, as then a secondary bacterial infection can end up also being a problem with a sharp rise in temperature to 104 F. At that point, you need antibiotics. |

On a farm, that straw or hay might be contaminated with fecal matter or whatever. That could cause a serious bacterial infection. So serious that somebody has to sit with them through the night checking temperatures and making sure they don't spike. That can be real scary where you have to immerse a patient in cold water water in the bathtub. Now that could be especially bad because of weather and being in a rural area. |

User ID: 72417015 United States 11/26/2020 08:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is a bacterial infection. Every time I mulched I would get pneumonia. Each time it would be bacterial. At first I was taking a pneumonia shot every five years but it did not help. I quit mulching and also started wearing a mask when I mow if it is dry and a lot of leaves. My problem arose from dead and dried media I used or it was naturally occurring in the yard. I guess the first time I noticed getting sick from it was raking leaves and making leaf forts as a child. I would always throw up. "If you gotta eat a turd eat it fast." |

When going to get dry hay often times the bales on the ground or exposes to moisture like rain without a cover roof; will lead to moldy hay with mushrooms growing. Its only an issue really; if you were to like open a "flake" of hay off the bail and in between the mold is WHITE WITH THE CONSISTENCY OF BAKING POWDER. Breathing that stuff, IF YOU WERE A HORSE, because you aren't smart enough to not eat ... The horse can inhale large quantities of this over several feedings and their lungs get toasted; they can't cough flem like humans; they theoretically drown from mucus build up in their lungs... Farmers lung ... Breathing hay burning, because hay don't burn, it smolders thick white billowing smoke and HAY FEVER will jack your head and lungs up for about 10 days and DO NOTHING just keep working and push on thru; THATS WHY FARMERS ARE STRONG! No worries; at age 46 with 30 years farming, as a man, I still run marathons and hit the weights... I am AMERICAN BADASS and part of the farmers that feeds 98% of the human population ... Breathing air fresh air will not harm you! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 69636023 United States 11/26/2020 09:50 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | You get exposed to fungus but it is less likely. A lot of people get allergies from dust mites. In certain parts of the southwest, as they lack windbreaks, they get bad soil erosion. That gets circulated and then you have the toxic brew of Valley Fever which can be a little bit of everything. People don't know they got it, then move, and then visit the doc and he or she is scratching their head until taking a proper patient history. That is endemic to that southwest region and gets kicked up with drought conditions. They can analyze what immunoglobins are elevated and that helps isolate the cause. It's hard saying unless you know where people generally are from. |

In the future, if/when Harbor Fright gets them back in stock, get one of their half face, two filter element (P95) masks. Replacement filter elements are available. I got the coof some years ago cleaning out the chicken coop without a mask (dumb). Got the HF mask, have used it four times while cleaning chicken coop, had no problems. Neighbor rancher got real close to a cow that that had brucillis (bad spelling, sue me) or some kind of pneumonia ... he didn't use a mask. He caught it, got real sick almost killed him. Now on high flow oxygen for life. Use a GOOD mask. |
