Maybe for the food, but certainly not for the humans who consume it.

Right! We just had "pumpkin pie" that tasted more like water than pumpkin. And don't get me started on the apples!

Also, I have no idea why my posts show me as being in Canada. I'm not in Canada; I'm in the midwest (USA). Go figure?!

You will probably like our steak(don't get one from a chain restaurant) and our barbecue.

Also, avoid using a knife and fork when eating pizza.

I'm sorry to disappoint you---but, nobody dropped me as a baby. However, I was trampled by horses when I was a young child, so maybe you're on to something. Feel better now?

The thing is... chains were good back in the day to help get the word out, but nowadays, most are run by children who couldn't care less about quality. And, sadly, I can't blame them because management cares even less.

They haven't gone anywhere and think McDonald's fries is the height of cuisine.

But I have seen nasty stuff passed off as "food" overseas.

Its called well fare food elite want everyone eating the same
no exceptions but their own.

Agree that most of it is crap, but if you are lucky enough to live where there is a local 'foodshed' you can eat real food. Localharvest.org has a feature where you can put in your zipcode and find local food close to you. I think there are versions in other countries as well. A lot of people here use CSA's (community supported agriculture) where you buy a subscription and get a weekly allotment..for veggies, fruits, milk and cheese, breads, meats, pickles, etc. I can't stand to eat in restaurants anymore because it really is all the same thing from the same supplier - and way overpriced.

It's also opening day for hunting a lot of places if you like venison.

Right! What some restaurants and grocery stores around here (the US) try to pass off as "food" is absolutely horrifying. My family and I do our best to source our food locally, but it's getting increasingly difficult to do so.

I remember when burgers from all the fast food places tasted like burgers. Especially Wendys was dripping with grease and a great meat smell. Now the meat tastes like soy bark. It has to be additives, preservatives and whatever chemicals in the feed they use for animals. You are what you eat.

Yeah, it's hunting season here too, which is helpful. And, thankfully, we rarely go out to eat anymore (even before this CV stuff hit the headlines). But we do live in a rural area, so grocery shopping is pretty much limited to our "local" Walmart, which is absolutely awful.

For many years McDonald's burgers made me feel awful, like folks describe a hangover.

Also true. Of course, I haven't really had much fast-food since starting a family, but I do remember that after eating a lot of it, I felt like death warmed over.

OP, if you are not familiar with our steaks, I recommend a Tbone.

The cut is pretty distinctive and you will not get an inferior cut dressed up as something else.

Use a place that is frequented by the locals.

And it is a watchword here that you should go where cops eat, because they can't eat at home and they know all the places.

If you already know this, it still stands for any others trying to find their way in a strange land.

T-Bones are great! But yeah, you're right... a place that is frequented by the locals is usually a good place to try. My family and I have a local food place here, so I'm kind of picky about the food we eat (and serve).

We have a local processor..not inspected, but you can go buy from them and I think the local backwoods biker bar gets hamburger from them. Those are the only burgers I will eat out, sometimes you have to deal with the owner stomping around the place flaunting his open carry (as if an old grey haired lady with a bunch of teenagers is gonna bust it up lol) But the burgers are good! I am lucky that my work allows me to get paid in barter. My family jokes we are never going to be without jelly or venison.

First off, we need to get back to locally grown fresh produce, and produce that is allowed to mature, and not picked young, waxed and gassed to survive transport.

Second, go back to natural heirloom produce.

Third, utilize the ocean/seas to get nutrients to put back into our over produced soils in the heartland.

seriously, no matter where you live in the US localharvest.org is a great place to get started with a CSA


heh, we even have beer, wine, hard cider and distilleries to choose from here.

because people have been paid off. owners of companies who don't care about anything but the bottom line.
the products last less time now.

you just have to find the good spots. go to them and keep them open.

i consider chain restaurants no better than cooking a microwave meal. fast food has no flavor like stated above.

tons of HFCS in everything. this is when americans started really getting fat in the 90's was when it was allowed in everything. Everything is soy or corn. that is part of the problem.

It also makes our cattle healthy...They feed the nutrition to the animals for quality meat, and feed the chemicals to poor people who are either too stupid or too poor to buy real food...

Threads like this make me realize how fortunate I am to own a farm.yes the fda is in bed with big pharma ,from cradle to grave.hell people still use microwaves, irradiating the nutrients in their food.

Microwaves use electromagnetic waves, it's not the same as nuclear radiation...The lights in your home give off radiation and it's harmless...

People just need to cook for themselves and avoid all that high-carb processed crap. Half the country is content with a diet made up mostly of cheap bread (sandwiches with processed meats/cheese), french fries, pizza, spaghetti, tacos, and soda.

Nothing wrong with eating like that if you are a lumberjack, but the average person shouldn't...
