Why? .223 is a cheap and highly effective round. It has high velocity, penetration and reach. Its very effective at both close and mid/long range. It defeats body armor (where something like 9mm cannot, they don't give a shit about 9mm unless its full auto). .223 can be reloaded. Finally the magazine capacity and rate of fire is enough to thwart any of their counter weapons. Its all about firepower. Feel free to add any other reasons.
