I had a friend from Bellingham decades ago and I visited him up there and when we drove around reservation property he said the Lummi tribe had a huge alcoholism problem and were always getting in horrible car accident s.

Possibly related, from 23 Nov. Several train tanker cars derailed in Central California. One of the tanker cars contained hydrochloric acid. Hazmat teams were dispatched for cleanup. The 99 freeway was closed both to northbound and southbound traffic. Traffic was rerouted on country roads. No word in news reports about cause, as though it's being kept quiet.

I used to live in Bellingham. I left over a decade years ago for Seattle, but always entertained the idea of moving back because it's beautiful there, and really was a great place to live.

Now I'm making plans to get out of Seattle, or at least have a solid backup plan if/when things really go to hell here and it's too dangerous/futile to stay. I drove up to Bellingham for the first time in maybe three years to look around--I don't know why I bothered, except to rule it out for good so I could shift my focus elsewhere. It makes me sad to think of what my laid-back little "City of Subdued Excitement" has become.

I ended up exploring other options in Western WA because I did't want to leave this region. Lewis County was a possibility, but I also looked into smaller towns and semi-rural areas in Snohomish, Skagit, Pierce, Kitsap, and Jefferson Counties. (I did find a place, but for privacy's sake I won't say where it is.) Having a place to go is a huge relief, though; I think we're going to have a "Roaring '20s" again, but unlike the 1920s the roar will be that of the mob.

So start exploring--see what options are available. Go east of the Cascades if you have to; if I was a heat-tolerant critter, I would have considered that.
