SN 8 Starship launch to landing explosion tracked by my software | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 77640231 United States 12/16/2020 11:29 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Cosmic Perspective worked in collaboration with Everyday Astronaut on YouTube to attend the launch of SpaceX SN8. They were able to use my tracking software to follow the rocket with a telescope and capture some stunning 4K footage of the entire flight, including the explosion at the end. At 5:30 in this video you can see the tracking setup I designed for them: Even though I couldn't be there, I'm very happy to see how well they were able to track it with my software. Hopefully when SpaceX lands a starship successfully, my software will be there once again. So primitive, crazy we are still using rockets. |

Its ass if he’s trolling TPTB with their own out dated technology just to prove a point he’s vastly superior. The same with that hideous metal truck. The exaplosion was a Huge finger to someone. |

So happy that your software got used and you all were able to collaborate to get the footage shot. What happened? Did they mean to restart the engines that close to the ground or were they supposed to fire long before that. It was traveling at a pretty decent clip on its descent just before it hit the pad. Still, they did manage to get her up there. I can launch a rocket from a kit as long as I have about eight really smart people to help me out. It's like having the Space Program back all of this SpaceX stuff. Just like when I was a kid and a teen and then a young adult, there was always something going up or coming down from space. Gave you hope! Eireann~ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. - Galatians 2:20 |

Did they mean to restart the engines that close to the ground or were they supposed to fire long before that. It was traveling at a pretty decent clip on its descent just before it hit the pad. The timing was fine but the engines began shutting down and lost thrust. Watch one of the engines flame out in the middle of the landing on the slow mo footage. The other one starts burning green because it's fuel starved. The mix of oxygen to fuel is then weighted heavily in favor of oxygen, which begins oxidizing everything in the engine and burning the metals, causing the green flame. The rocket has to use header tanks to provide fuel to the engines during the landing, the fuel in the main tanks is all sitting to the side during the belly flop. They're relying on autogenous pressurization of the fuel tanks (gassification of the fuel itself to keep the tank pressurized) but it wasn't enough. |

Oh, that's why it was green. *facepalm* I'll watch the slow motion footage and watch for the things you pointed out. Thank you for your reply. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79670645 It is to reiterate to the naysayers that it actually exists and real footage. The naysayers also try to deny that it's my software. I never claimed to invent the concept of telescopic tracking in general, but I did write this program to make it easy to track launches with a variety of off the shelf telescope hardware. There are multiple people now using it to track launches. And I dare say my satellite tracking program is the easiest way to observe ISS at high magnification with an amateur telescope. Yes, I advertise my software so that other content creators might see it and set up even more collaborations with me. Is that so wrong? |

I use a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema 4K with my LX200 for launches, it works well. I think they used a Z cam for this one. Do you have a pic of the camera rig? Is it motorized? A legend in my own mind |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 79670645 I know of only a couple other people who have ever tracked a Falcon rocket from launch to landing in one continuous shot. It's not easy at all. I did it on the very first Falcon Heavy launch and I'm the only one who got that shot on that launch. It was all thanks to my software. |

I'm busy learning about them. Well until you start launching stuff into orbit with something better, I guess companies like SpaceX will keep using good old chemical rocket propulsion. If SpaceX perfects starship it will be completely reusable and the fuel is a lot cheaper than the rocket itself. nah I'll wait for the (good) alien tech. I'm not holding my breath for SpaceX to reach perfection. they seem mostly like a bad joke to me. The company that makes the world's cheapest and most-used rocket seems like a bad joke to you? The company that beat Boeing to putting astronauts back in space from American soil on American rockets? Ok, cool story. they better be cheap if they keep blowing them up! yes I am not very impressed. |

They arent going to space. They arent innovating. They are failing. And their failures are being celebrated. Pathetic. Let me know when they do something groundbreaking. |
