In partial pursuits,
one's transformation is always
partial as well. But in integral self-
cultivation, it is possible to achieve a
complete metamorphosis, to transcend
your emotional and biological
limitations and evolve
to a higher state
of being.

By staying out
of the shadows and
following this simple path,
you become extraordinary,
unfathomable, a being
of profound cosmic
subtlety.

like the clear blue sky at dawn,
unmarked by any message from man
or heaven. Continually stoking the
fire of emptiness with the breath,
you instantly incinerate
whatever appears.

of the masters are only tricks,
ways of turning you toward the
clear realization that accompanies
you everywhere, and always has.
Once you've picked up
on this, you can put
the tricks down
and go on.

The cords of passion and desire
weave a binding net around you.
Worldly confrontation makes you
stiff and inflexible.
The trap of duality is tenacious.
Bound, rigid, trapped,
you cannot experience liberation.

With Tao,
sometimes you move ahead
and sometimes you stay back;
Sometimes you work hard and
sometimes you rest;
Sometimes you're strong
and sometimes you're weak;
Sometimes you're up;
sometimes you're down.

The sage remains alert,
avoiding extremes,
avoiding extravagance,
avoiding excess.

If you want to become whole,
let yourself be partial.
If you want to become straight,
let yourself be crooked.
If you want to become full,
let yourself be empty.
If you want to be reborn,
let yourself die.
If you want to be given everything,
give everything up.

The teacher cannot
aid the student as long as
the student's spirit is contaminated.
The cleansing of the spiritual
contamination is not the
responsibility of the
teacher, but of the
student.

It’s simple
to become a sage: all
that’s required is to burn
up, die, and cool
into ashes.

Rise early,
then, and set fire to
all you think and feel and
believe. Look beyond the smoke
of that pit into what is left:
emptiness filled with
emptiness.

Breathe it in.
Pour it out. Circulating
the Oneness without stopping,
endlessly renewing your determination,
working steadily day after day and
year upon year, you’ll find
yourself alert, rested,
illuminated.

is the movement of Tao.
Quietness is how it functions.

The ten
thousand things are born
of being. Being is born
of emptiness.

Moving from
knowing to not knowing—
this is good.

Moving from
not knowing to knowing—
this is sickness.

You have to become
sick of your sickness
before you can get rid of it.

The sage isn't sick.
He's sick of his sickness.
Therefore he's not sick.

This is a time of difficult and dangerous conditions. You should not be seduced into struggling, striving, or seeking solutions through aggressive action. Success is met only by waiting modestly for the guidance of the Creative.

Trying times are a test of our integrity and commitment to proper principles. The ordinary person reacts to challenges with fear, anger, mistrust of fate, and a stubborn desire to strike out and eliminate difficulty once and for all. While the temptation to act in this way can be great, to do so can only lead to misfortune and the loss of hard-won ground.

There is no ground, no benchmarks of progress, no nothing except a well-fed and emasculated slavery at the end with undeserving admiration for things which aren't true by people willing to look the other way at enormities which ought to be glaring. That's a Tao order.
