I think their fear is that, as POTUS, Trump's still Commander and Chief of the military, and the military is able to deal with traitors.

They saw yesterday just how fragile their grip on power is and how few people it takes to challenge them. They want to nip this in the bud and they don't want people getting any ideas about continuing this.

So look for them to throw the book at everyone involved yesterday. They have to make examples of them. Because if people who are upset started doing this all the time, their power would crumble. Their weakness has been exposed. The only thing that keeps them in power is people worried about "muh respectability" and "muh civility".
