National Guard are really civilians in uniform. They work for the state governors. They can be activated for duty overseas by making them Title 10.

National Guard are part-timers from each state

My friend did it

Went for a camp out every Summer for two weeks

Then one weekend a month

They give them training

They are NOT BATTLE HARDENED Military

Mostly get called out for floods and hurricane relief

My friend had to clean up mud in the streets of a Fl ooded town and they had to capture coffins that floated up out of the cemeteries .... and put the stiffs back in them ...he wasn’t sure they got them in the right boxes either

They were brought there and will be there through January 20

They don’t even look like soldiers. They’re young men in a uniform.

Are they American?

Most of them have not ever had any combat experience. They go to classes and do some field work with the equipment.

That said, sometimes experienced guys who have had actual combat experience will sign up with the guard after getting out of whatever service they were in. Those guys are usually the teachers (with some rank) who instruct the younger guys.

In times of war (which with the US can be damned near any time) units of the guard will be shipped to some hot spots.

They're basically the organized state militia, not regular army. Usually they're under the jurisdiction of the states unless they're federalized during an emergency or war. Why out of state National Guard units are in D.C. is another question.
