I live in AZ and there is not much that will grow in my garden as the weather is just too harsh, but I have begged the hubs to build me a greenhouse to protect our garden from the INASANE amount of things that will eat your crop in AZ: pack rats, birds, caterpillars (We have "loopers" that will destroy a plant in a week) and a myriad of other "pests"
(last year we had people stealing our lemons from our lemon tree!)

Kind of reminds me of when Russia starved 7,000,000 Ukrainians in one year. All of their food was transported out of the country and they were literally shot dead if found taking grain off the ground of a crop field. I think this is something that is a bit of a misnomer.

The rabbit thing I think is a good idea. I don't have any myself, but have a friend who does, and they do multiply very quickly.

Rabbit starvation is a thing though, its a very lean meat so as I understand it if you eat just that u do end up lacking fats.

Stock up on SEA MOSS. It has most the nutrients you need and extremely long shelf life!

Intermittent fast and you won’t need much food. Look around and see how many overweight people there are. Most overeat everyday. And then throw away food also. Buy inky what you will eat. Have some bottles of vitamin and minerals on hand. Those will last quite a while. Buy lard and coconut oil etc for a fat source. It’s cheap. Lots of calories in a spoon full. Get some large bags of sugar and salt for electrolytes. No salt is a good and cheap source of potassium.

Dried kelp is good. Dollar tree has that.

Everytime I go to the store, I've been picking up an extra bag of beans and rice. Bought 5 gallon food grade buckets to put them in. I figure I now have enough beans and rice to get us through at least a year if it comes down to it.

Growing your own food is a good idea. However, unless you are in a community of like minded people and rather rural and/or self contained, you will be robbed of any food growing in a garden or it will be destroyed by the authorities.

My head is so sore from banging it against a wall trying to get people to realize that we must unite and consolidate to create enclave(s) of sensible, conservative, multi-talented peopled communities to have any chance if survival.

And even then, unless we are quite remote, we could easily become a target and be either overrun or seen as a threat by the got and taken out.

But no one wants to talk about scoping out possible locations or a plan.

Some may believe they can make it on their own with their family. Well, what happens if the man of the house breaks a leg, who is going to step in and help with the heavy work? Can the wife take care of him, the children, feeding the animals, tending the garden, cooking and canning all at the same time? And, at the same time fell some trees, split the wood do there will be dried firewood for next season..

And I am not discounting women, my point is to be a thriving group with manpower to help out, you need more than your family; and certainly if you are to face some kind of mad max groups which surely will be looking to find some free food, the pleasure of women and shelter...

Look what happened to that family at ruby and that was the givt. If it were gang, the outcome would be as bad or worse. Do you really want to possibly expose your wife, sons and dsughters, grandchildren to such vermin?

As a farmer and rancher ALL of my adult life let me say ... Good luck with this heading to the hills, and TRYING to stay alive BS ... most will starve in short order.

Raising livestock is what I do, and it is hard, dirty, expensive, and sometimes heartbreaking. If you do not have experience raising and growing crops, and livestock, your learning curve is going to be horrible and expensive. Leading to the death of your stock and yourself.

You do not just jump into this sort of experience ... it takes a lot of time and money to get started. AND, since the covid panic ... the supply of animals has tripled in price, and there is a severe shortage of stock for sale.

A few questions for each of you that THINK you can just jump into raising and culling, butchering, your own stock.

How long does it take a chicken to get to butcher weight? How about a beef? A pig? A rabbit?

What temp does a baby chick need to stay alive until it is feathered out?

How much water does a sheep need per day?

What animal does not sweat?

How many eggs does the average laying hen lay over a years time?

Yep, start now and do your research!! I had retired but the covid, and all the culling by the BS gov. put me back in to it full time, again.


Just the expense of fencing will break most people now days. Fencing you say??? Always, ALWAYS, always have your security up before buying any animals!! Fencing keeps them and you safe!

The most important question is, After all the expense of raising these animals can you honestly, truthfully, be able to shot and butcher them??? Do you know how to take care of all of that meat without losing most of it?

I truly wish more people would have done this 15 to 20 years ago ... and we would not be where we are now.
