Oh, sorry. I don't know why the site says I'm in Canada. I'm in Canada's southern neighbor. Down here we don't need a license for an airgun. (We don't need a license for a regular gun, either, only a background check...) |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 78258637 Australia 01/18/2021 05:24 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I’m looking to order one and don’t want a crappy one. Quoting: -Kate- Any tips welcome as well because I’m new to this! Homemade. Car Leaf spring. My cousin and I made our own one as kids. More powerful than anything sold today. We made it from a 4 by 2. A car leaf spring and parts from a bicycle. It would leave bruises on your shoulder. You could use rebar for ammo. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79927038 Canada 01/18/2021 05:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Kate: If you want to buy a crossbow, I recommend any Xbow from Excalibur. It's a Canadian Company, and it is arguably the best Xbow around. DO NOT buy a compound crossbow. The pulleys on them can be a big headache. Simpler is better. Get the drawing aid too. I have the Phoenix - it's an older model but still works like new. Good luck. [link to www.excaliburcrossbow.com (secure)] |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 79934544 United States 01/18/2021 08:11 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | For me here in Idaho to hunt (legally) with one is considered a gun as far as hunting season goes, it doesn't make sense. Now if we were in a every man for himself scenario (red dawn) then owning one would make a hell of a lot of sense for bringing down four and two legged critters. If everything goes to hell in a handbasket I'm probably not going to worry about a fish and game dude either. |

Quoting: roguetechie81 Out of curiosity kate, why a crossbow instead of a gun? Also, you do realize that a crossbow big enough to be useful is likely not only going to be expensive but also going to require large amounts of strength to operate right? Save on ammo for hunting, I learned a bit about crossbow hunting this summer when I took the hunters safety program and I’d like to get into the sport. I’m pretty strong these days from lifting weights daily so that shouldn’t be a problem. I’m seeing prices from 600.00 CA to 1700.00, that’s a big difference so I thought I’d ask. Rofl I would hardly say a crossbow saves you money on hunting considering that the bolts cost close to 10 dollars per one and it is really easy to lose one or have one hit a tree or bone and bend etc... The only reason I would recommend a crossbow is that they are quieter than your average firearm, but you can buy a silencer for a 22 rifle and get some subsonic ammunition and hunt without the people next door knowing about it. Okay I’m learning lol, so this is new for me. But I’d like to get into it while I wait for my gun license. I was hoping to go to the range where I live since I took those courses this summer but everything is shut down!! Anyways it is what it is. I just pulled up a Canadian Tire website for the store we have in town here that has this one in stock and they offer curb side pick up. Will it be good to start out with? [imgur] [link to imgur.com (secure)] I prefer reverse draw crossbows because they tend to pack more of a punch because the bolt has more room to travel before it leaves the crossbow. The one I used to have was very fun to shoot and pretty damn accurate. I sold it eventually when I realized how expensive the bolts were and that it would not make a good survival tool when a 22 rifle is soo much better. I eventually picked up the Ruger 10/22 takedown and I am quite happy with that purchase. |

It takes 80% of the pressure off the limbs....and if your going to sit in a tree all day with the your bow drawn for 8 to 10 hours you want as little pressure as possible on the limbs. They are fiberglass and will break. You dont want that in the tree. Ive seen 100s of crossbow hunters and used one every year for 25 years and thats about the last time I saw one with solid limbs. Just silly. |

Find a quality guy who owns a quality crossbow and marry him. I am sure he will let you use it as if it were your own. Mi Casa Es Su Casa (and all that). Wouldn't that be the best complete crossbow package you can find? Unfortunately, I don't own a crossbow, but I have had one in my shopping cart for about 7 years now. If you do choose to go this alone, I would go with a Barnett or Ten Point in the mid to high price point. |
